Character and Reputation

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” - John Wooden

I just found this on facebook from an inspirational post page ( www.facebook.com/LightKnocks ) and thought about myself - while I do care about my character when it comes to who I am, professionally I care about my reputation just as much, who I appear to be to my customers and referrals, the people who (hopefully) are going to put £'s (or $'s) in my pocket at the end of the day.

If those people don't think I'm the person they can like and trust they won't spend a penny with me.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I don't build trust with my customer I won't make sales but equally, if I don't do it ethically my character will suffer too. That's why honesty is so important in relationships of any kind, be it personal, business or anything else - after all, if you can't be honest with yourself who can you be honest with?

That's why I love WA - no empty promises, great training and info, great people supporting me when I need it and great leadership.

What do you think?

Richard.

P.S. Reading this back I'm wondering why I struggle with making content!

If you write honestly, your character will definitely show in your blog. People are not search engines, and they can detect sincerity. Whatever your niche is, finding your voice and speaking directly to your audience is a great way to gain authority. Then the sales come. Seek sales from day 1, and you'll find it much hard to make them.

Good advice. Glad you also had a learning experience.

I agree with you.

Congrats Richard, you have come up with a great blog and a new discovery - you can write and make a point. I think that while your reputation is so very very important, especially if you want to have people that know nothing about you trust you, that John Wooden is correct. Character is what you are, your reputation can be sullied by anyone for any reason, but if your character is strong and you have been honest with yourself I believe that will shine through anyone's opinion of another. Keep up the good work and write write write.

I agree with what you said about reputation. I do care about my reputation but my character will show through. Thank you for sharing. I wish you success with your online business. Debbie

This is great. You are 100% correct. In any thing we do and in relationships, family, friends, or business our character will determine how others will respond and remeber us. Thanks.

I think it's one of the most important things that I've relearned here, the importance of relationships and trust. But I've also learned about my relationship with me, myself - that's just as important to me now :)

Hi Richard
Well you've sorted one thing... you can certainly write content. And you're absolutely right - trust with you customers is really important. And no there are no empty promises with WA - it's a relief isn't it!

That's right - no empty promises here! I think sometimes with content it just takes a catalyst, something to get the head working and finding the catalyst is the difficult thing, not the content.
