Penguin Algorithms
What Is The Google Penguin Algorithm Update?
The Google Penguin Algorithm Update is an algorithmic update that was first launched in April 2012. The purpose of the update was to identify and penalize websites that engaged in link spamming practices. Specifically, the Penguin update targeted websites that had engaged in manipulative link-building practices, such as buying links or participating in link schemes.
History Of The Google Penguin Algorithm Update
The Penguin algorithm update has undergone several iterations since its initial launch in April 2012. However, the latest iteration of Penguin 5.0 was done in 2020.
What Does the Penguin Algorithm Do?
The Penguin update works by crawling backlinks om websites and assigning each backlink a score. Some of the backlinks that the Penguin Update will zone in on are:
· Bought links
· Backlinks from untrustworthy sources
· Backlinks that have the same anchor text
· Bot-built backlinks
· Backlinks from irrelevant sites
Was the Penguin Update Needed?
Websites that are sited for any of the above conditions, will receive a Google Penalty. This means that not only will your ranking drop in SERPS, but traffic to your site will also decrease. However, the Penguin update is more granular and in real time.
· This means that instead of the whole site being hit by a penalty, the algorithm can select parts of the website – a single page or a sub-directory (growhackscale.com).
· In order to avoid a Google penalty, you can frequently Disavow links. When you edit your links Google will notice quickly and will regain your ranking.
How to Recover from Penguin
Being hit by the Penguin Update is not the end of the world. However, there is an easy way to recover. Just follow these steps:
Identify The Cause Of The Penalty
The first step in recovering from a Penguin penalty is to identify the cause of the penalty. This involves conducting a thorough audit of your website to identify any spammy or manipulative link-building practices that may have triggered the penalty.
Remove Spammy Links
Once you’ve identified the cause of the penalty, the next step is to remove any spammy or manipulative links contributing to the penalty. This involves reaching out to webmasters and requesting the removal of any spammy links pointing to your website.
The Penguin update was designed to target these practices by devaluing the importance of spammy links and penalizing websites that relied too heavily on these types of links to achieve high search engine rankings. The goal of the Penguin update was to create a more level playing field for all websites and to reward websites that engaged in ethical and legitimate link-building practices.
Disavow Toxic Links
In cases where you’re unable to have spammy links removed, you can use Google’s Disavow Tool to tell Google to ignore these links when evaluating your website. However, this should only be used as a last resort, and only after you’ve made a good-faith effort to have spammy links removed.
Steps to Recovery
If your website has been penalized by a Penguin penalty, there are steps you can take to recover your search engine rankings, including identifying the cause of the penalty, removing spammy links, disavowing toxic links, building high-quality backlinks, and monitoring your backlink profile.
Penalizing Faulty Links
The Penguin update was designed to target these practices by devaluing the importance of spammy links and penalizing websites that relied too heavily on these types of links to achieve high search engine rankings. The goal of the Penguin update was to create a more level playing field for all websites and to reward websites that engaged in ethical and legitimate link-building practices.
Penguin Algorithm in Real-Time
According to Search Engine Journals, the Penguin Algorithm has had a number of updates and has become a real-time part of the core Google algorithm. As a result, penalties have become less common, but still exist both in partial and site-wide format.
Google claims to ignore a lot of poor-quality links online. However, you can be assured that they are still monitoring for unnatural patterns such as link schemes, private blog networks (PBNs), link exchanges, and unnatural outboard linking patterns.
Here is the facts straight from the horses mouth. Google breaks it all down in plain and simple, digestible terms.

Hi there, Joe.
This is probably not an issue to newbies and affiliates that play by the rules.
Have a great day!
Rachele🌞
Hi Rachele
You can monitor your backlink profile right from GSC.
Don’t underestimate the power of GSC and GA4! They are like Google speaking to you directly! 😎
Also, if you use ChatGPT4, you can export this data and have AI analyze it for you with recommendations!
Rock On 🤘
Frank 🎸
Good morning, Frank.
Thanks for this invaluable information. I needed to hear this information. It makes our life so much more expansive when things are built in and are in plain sight. Google University has sooooo many rules and endless regulations. It will take me at least a year (light year) or more to review all these nooks and crannies of Google.
I need to utilize my GSC and GA4 ALOT more. I love when Google speaks. They are more popular than God right now. However, I believe in both. Haha!
I have not gotten into ChatGPT 4 too much. Guess I better do a deep dive into that next.
There's way too much to juggle, my friend. My brain is not that good at multitasking. However, I will definitely buckle up and use all of the above resources to increase my productivity. Thanks for the image. Leave it to Maestro genius to take us through the Google quagmire (lol)🥰
Rachele
p.s. Can you make us a mini handbook of all these nuances. I'll buy a bulk load and sell them as an eBook (lol)😊. Next is a little Rachele BS
😉 I think that getting an understanding of all these tools and how they are connected is the first step. After that, it should become easier to navigate the Google ecosystem. So I need to take some time to review each tool or resource one by one and see what I can learn from it all. I'm sure we'll have plenty of questions along the way, but that's why we're here at Wealthy Affiliate - to get answers and learn as a team! 🤗
Let's dig in! 🎉
First up is Google Search Console. This is where we submit our sitemap to inform Google of all the pages on our website that we want it to crawl and index. It's also where you can get insights into how well Google is currently crawling and indexing our sites, as well as identify any errors or issues that may be occurring. This tool will become even more important once we start creating content for our website, as this is where we'll track performance and optimize our content to make sure it's reaching as many people as possible.
Next up is Google Analytics. This is where I can track the performance of my website, such as how much traffic it's receiving, what sources are providing that traffic, and how users are interacting with my site (e.g., pages they're visiting and for how long). It's also an invaluable tool for understanding how our content is performing, as well as identifying opportunities to improve.
Finally, I'll want to keep an eye on Google Search Console. This is a great tool for seeing how our website is displaying in search results, both organic and paid. It can show us which keywords are being used by searchers when they find my website, and which pages appear in the search results for those terms. This is critical information that I can use to refine my content so that it's more visible and effective.
Ultimately, a combination of these tools will help us ensure our content is reaching its intended audience and performing as well as possible. Thanks for taking the time to learn about these important topics; I hope this article has been helpful!
Thanks again for taking the time to read this article and bs to help us on our content optimization journey!

Hi Rachele
It sounds like you are well on your way to getting the most out of GSC and GA4! 👍👍
Everything takes time, just keep at it. 😎
BTW, a light-year is not a time duration, it’s a distance. It’s how far you would travel if you moved at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) for one year. So, it’s a total distance of 5.88 trillion miles.
Rock On!🤘
Frank 🎸
Hi there, Franklin.
Exactly. The only way to get to Carnie Hall is to practice, practice, practice. Nothing worth having comes easy, my amigo. I am engaged to GSC & GA-4, we just haven't planned the wedding yet (lol).
OK, Mr. Einstein, you have added knowledge to my knowledge bank, and that's a good thing. Knowledge is power. Do you have this knowledge committed to your memory or just just in Google Search? You do not have to reply. Just curious. Love the knowledge bombs 🥰
Thanks for the love, my friend.
Rachele
Rock on!🎸+1
Well right now, I am not swinging on the stars anymore doing graveyard shifts.
By the way, I love working through the night while everyone is sleep. It's so peaceful and quiet. However, I am doing daylight blogging right now. It is a challenge but it needs to be done.
Did you know that some people walk in there sleep? You bloggers must be from the HBO television series Game of Thrones, hey? I mean, the hours you keep, the energy and enthusiasm you have for your work.
Maybe it is just my perspective as an outsider looking in; but I salute you night walkers! You are a rare breed of creative people. Keep on keeping on.
Rachele
🤣🤣🤣 I’m at not among the night walkers in that perspective.
But I can be consider a cousin of the night walkers. One who can’t sleep at night and is fairly active lol
What Up, Kida.
Are you drinking coffee or caffeinated drinks in the afternoon? This could be why you may be a cousin of the night walkers.
I have been doing graveyard shifts for a number of years, and I got used to pulling all-nighters. Lots and lots of caffeine,
These patterns came to a shrieking halt due to a spike in my blood pressure. The hydrochlorothiazide came to my rescue. Then my doctor said "no more caffeine and no more graveyard shifts." As a result, I went through an intense detox from all the caffeine. Talking about withdrawal symptoms!
Holy mackerel. It was insane. My head felt like it was detached from my body. It was wicked. Right now, my drug of choice is Uncle Lee's Green Tea. Thank's to Dr. Connie Chen.
Now I am sure that I will become a jovial Octogenarian without a hitch (lol). My gramma, Maggie, was the happiest person in the world. She used to say "two cups of coffee a day keeps the doctor away." After giving birth to 14 kids, I guess she knew what she was talking about. Bless her heart. She was the love of my life.
That's all I got honeybunch.

coffee fiend through and through. Haven’t had any today. Just Apple juice and not so healthy grape juice lol 😆
Evidently, the Penguin is not ready to go yet.
I don't know exactly how I tapped into the Penguin Algorithm information, but it sounded pretty interesting. You know? I guess it was in an email -that;s where I learn stuff. I know that it was one of the first algorithms used by Google. Not sure, though.
Anyways, I think penguins are cute. Did you see the Penguin movie? They are pretty cool creatures. My uncle looks and talks like a Penguin, so I call him Penguin accordingly (lol).

Something that I never knew about or paid attention to, Rachele! Good info, as usual!
Jeff
Good morning, Jeff.
Thanks for stopping by. Looks like Google has our best interests in mind.
Have a splendid day.
Rachele🌞
I am not so sure about that, Rachele! There is a huge anti-trust lawsuit in the works for Google, we will have to wait and see!
Jeff
Hi there, Jeff.
I did hear a quick news flash regarding a lawsuit against Google. So, is this a big deal. Can you DM is you find any new information?
Rachele
You can always type it it--Google Anti-Trust lawsuit!
Jeff
Alrighty! Got it!
Another bump in the road for Google. It's the insider that can mess up a company. In fact, it must be true that one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.
The head honchos calls the shots in these big mega corporations. You know what I mean? Let me read the facts first to see what's hitting the fan. What's done in the dark will always come out in the light. Everyone has to be accountable; even the powers that be.
Who depends on Google more than content creators?
Rachele
p.s. My pop used to tell us that one unjust penny can ruin your business. I guess he knew what he was talking about. Bless his heart.
Your Pop was right, and this has been a long time in coming, Rachele!
Jeff
Absolutely!
