An Amazon Associates reminder!!

Hey there....all you Amazon associates, eager to place Amazon links throughout your blog posts. This is a reminder (in case you missed it when signing up) that it's against their terms of service to SHORTEN their links by using Pretty Link Lite or any other link shortening plugin.

Amazon product links CAN be shortened, but you need to use their OWN shortening tool. As pointed out to me by "IndieGirl" (another WA member), the tool can be found from the "home page" of Amazon Associates, where it says "quickly add links".

Welcome to Associates Central

Quickly Add Links

advanced search

keyword or ASIN/ISBN

Once your item has been found by entering it in the search box, you'll click the down arrow to the right of the "get link" button. Once the URL pops up, it will offer you the option of shortening the link. This is what they intend you to use. I imagine that if you were to use your own abbreviated link, and Amazon caught wind of it, probably from getting a sale on that particular product, they could bump you from the Associates program.

Oh, I should also add, that it will only shorten links that go to a particular product...NOT a PAGE of similar products...which I have preferred to link to on occasion.

Happy linking everyone :-)

ooo interesting piece of info... but what is the purpose of shortening the link? o.O

You got me on that! Yes to be honest, I don't make a big deal about stuff like that. Personally, before I started WA training, I never noticed what URL I was being re-directed to on anybody's site. I certainly didn't care what the length of it was. I'm only more conscious of it now...since I know more about it. But naturally we hear from a lot of different people on WA...and the prevailing wisdom is that visitors to our site(s) shouldn't be subjected to the "ugly" URL that their 'click' is taking them to. So, we're encouraged to 'clean it up!'... so that it's "pretty" not ugly.

Hmm... now i am tempted to click on a long one and a short one to see the effects myself... but i shouldn't click my own.. . ugh

lol -- I don't think there's much difference. I still have a couple of longer ones on my site (because they go to product pages) but I've updated most of them to the "cleaner" version.

that is good to know thank you
