Eye Health is Very Important - Have you had your Eyes Checked?

Eye health is very important in our line of work, I can not imagine what will happen should my sight be impaired. So I have decided to go for an eye test. I have not been able to take a test since I did not have medical insurance.

Now that I have had one for a while and I qualify for a test, and a set of glasses, I made an appointment for tomorrow.

I used to wear spectacles. I actually wore spectacle from the age of 16. My Dad's employer put them on a medical aid scheme and we were able to get all sorts of treatments, through the Med-Aid.

I am not proud of all we did with our medical Aid Scheme but that is a tale for Anothere day. Doctors can be so bad when it comes to medical Aid. That is all I am prepared to say for now.

Coming Back to My Eye Test.

It is not me who actually needs a test it is one of my sons. He has been struggling to see in class. The teachers have actually asked if I can have his eyes tested immediately. Everyone should have their eyes tested at least once every year, but many of us don't, I included.

What could harm your eyes?

Some of us naturally need help with our eyes. It is just a matter of your genes. The use of technology may present harm to your vision. A healthy pair may end up needing some assistance and the sun is the eye's worst enemy.

In the same way, you may need protection from the Sun for your skin. You should be equally worried about your eyes. UVR is not good for your eyes and you should be protected always. Getting a cheap pair of sunglasses is no more enough.

The is better technology to now better protect your eyesight and it is advisable to invest in a proper set of eye protectors.

My Appointment or Rather, My Son's Eye Test Appointment.

Our government does provide free eye tests and prescription glasses for children under the age of twelve. So there is no need for children under age to be struggling with their eyesight.

It up to the parents to make arrangements for their children's eyes to be tested. But that may take too long as there could be a long wait to get an appointment.

As soon as I saw that it could be too long before we get a free appointment for my son, we booked on.

The reason I may be reluctant to use medical insurance is - Optometrists see this as an opportunity to make a sale. Like said I wore spectacles till I was 25. I am not sure if my eyesight improved or the eye Doctors just sold me spectacles for the sake of a sale from the medical aid money.

At 25, after an eye test, the optometrist saw me struggling with money to replace my broken frame of spectacles, he said to me, to my surprise, "You really don't need spectacles, your eyesight is perfect".

I asked. Now, why have I been wearing spectacles since 16? He just shrugged his shoulders. I thought back to each time I had glasses, It was because I had medical insurance. When I had to pay from my pocket, well I always complain when I have to spend money. I complained in front of the doctor and he said my eyes were fine. Don't get me wrong I have not struggled with eyesight till now.

The thing is if I don't get spectacles it is not like I can get any money back. I am paying for insurance anyway. That could be the Optometrists' thinking. If I am paying for the service why not get some protection anyway.

Don't fix it, if it is not broken.

As a matter of fact, I got bad headaches and nausea sometimes if I did not wear my spectacles.

• Do I need that, just so that I can get free sunshades?

So is, either way, it is better to be safe than not. We will get eye protection tomorrow should we need to.

And with all the time I am now spending on the laptop, I probably need eye support. And so do you. Stop squinting and get your eyes tested. Make an appointment, and be tested by a Professional Optometrist.
