Wine Tasting Home Party

by admin on June 16, 20140 Comments

Wining (not Whining) has become quite acceptable these days! I am talking about having a wine tasting home party in the comfort of your own home! Consider it the 2014 version of the Tupperware craze only without the psycho anal sales drone trying to pair you up with your very own matching set of designer plastic ice cream scoops & melon ballers, both of which are quite useless in my home unless you can mix a martini with them! Now, if there were a way to sip, drink, taste and get shnockered from the comfort of my home, well, sign me up!

It’s pretty simple to get a wine tasting party happening with only a few supplies and a small budget. I have outlined a few steps to creating your own wine tasting party at home. It can be fun, classy and you can leave the men to the beer drinking, potato chip & onion dip extravaganzas they love to indulge in.

Step 1- Create a fun Theme

The first step is to figure out what wines you would like to drink. Perhaps the first one can be imbibing the reds. Ask for recommendations from your local wine store or look on the web for good tasting red wines that fit your budget and the budgets of the guests who will be coming. Pick 6 or so of your favorites and ask each guest to sign-up to bring one of them. This way you can host the party without going broke.

Step 2- Decide on the food

A usual wine tasting, whether at a winery or vineyard always gives the option to pair foods with your tasting. It should be light menu such as crackers and cheeses so as not to take away from the flavors of the wines. The best way as a host is to supply your guests with various cheeses and crackers to go along with the actual tasting but add a dinner afterwards if budget allows. Another savvy way to pair food with your wine tasting if you are on a budget is to suggest your guests bring a dish to share after the festivities. After all, you are supplying the place and it’s your fabulous idea!

Step 3- Wine Glasses for tasting

It may not be completely out of your budget like you think to supply the right type of stemware to your wine sipping friends. There are numerous sites online that offer great deals on wine glasses and stemware. You can also look in thrift stores and tag sales for some nifty buys. The idea to have the right glasses for the type of wine is essential, so do your homework and shopping before the party.

Step 4- Supplies

Having the proper supplies is also a good idea when hosting a wine tasting party at home. Some of the things you will need are:

  • Cork screws
  • Water glasses
  • Ice bucket (for chilling whites)
  • White linen napkins
  • White linen tablecloth
  • Pens & notepads for guests to keep track of their favorites
  • Spittoon- This can be either a large bowl in the center (GROSS!) or paper cups for individual guest use (My choice)

Step 5- Invite the Winesperts

The perfect number of guests really depends on you. You may want an intimate party of 6-8 wine tasters or a wild party with 12 or more sippers. There is no right way or wrong way. A fun and inexpensive way to invite your guests is through social media by creating an event on facebook or sending out evites. It’s always nice to have guests who have an interest in wines so they can help you create the buzz about the party and not just get one!

Step 6- Picking the Right Time & Date

In my experience, there is never a perfect night, day, time of the year or date that fits into every person’s life. A good suggestion is to choose a time and date that works best for you so there isn’t a lot of pressure on yourself to get things going or completing tasks. Additionally, the time of year can assist in deciding what types of wines will be tasted. For instance, in the summer, whites and rose’s work best. In the winter, you may want to serve reds or dessert wines.

Step 7- Know your Wine Tasting Techniques

You don’t have to be a winespert but it is a good idea to learn a little about how to taste wines and be a good mentor of sorts to those first-time sippers. There are lots of books on the subject and you can even have a few available for your guests to peruse through so that they feel comfortable as well. It may even be beneficial to give a quick demonstration before the actual tasting starts. You can find some great books here.

Step 8- Have fun and don’t get wine wacky

Know your limits when it comes to wine drinking. In other words, as the host or wine whiz, it’s up to you to guide and educate your guests on the what you are serving. If you are wasted and slurring your words from too much grape gulping, the essence of your message may get lost in the bottom of the glass.

Wine tasting home parties are happening all over the place and many winesperts, aficionados and enthusiasts alike are finding new ways to party with friends without going broke and having a great party.
