Command + A - Made My Day

My Struggle

If anyone has ever felt defeated by a task that should be simple, but isn’t, you will understand my plight. You see, I have been fighting a battle with my iPad Pro. I work exclusively with it now and wouldn’t be without my touchscreen. I have used our laptop, but I find myself foolishly tapping a screen that does not respond to my touch. It leaves me wanting.

My website is in its infancy, but it is coming along nicely, I think. Feeling pride in my little accomplishments, I started adding widgets. Oh, the struggles began. That little ‘Select, Copy, Paste’ function failed me miserably. There was no way for me to copy all the code that was in the little text box thingy (techy talk). I could only copy the code that was visible. There was still a lot of code that was hidden and out of the ‘Select’ range.

I tried highliighting and scrolling down, but the whole screen moved and not the content in the box that I wanted to select. I tried copying small sections one at a time, only to realize that I had missed a character or two. Anyone who has ever missed characters of code knows the troubles that that can cause. I even tried the two finger tap, the swoop, the slap and the kick. It’s a good thing that there wasn’t a bucket of water around.

Google to the Rescue

I was so very frustrated. I spent more time on this than I care to admit. Well, it was close to 2 hours. Two hours that I could have spent doing something else, like sipping on a glass of wine on the deck with my husband. But, that’s not the point. It was TWO HOURS, gone.

I knew that there had to be a way, I had googled a few dead ends, but did finally find something. I was desperate and it was worth a shot.

‘Command’ + ‘A’

So, with some trepidation, I tried what was sure to be another disappointment. Just place the cursor next the text that you want to select and hold down the ‘Command’ key and the ‘A’ key. Presto! All of the text is highlighted right to the end...even the stuff that is hidden. I can copy/paste now. Needless to say, I’m ecstatic. I just want to surf around and Command A everything. It’s the small victories that make it all worthwhile.

Let me Know

Anyhow, I thought that I would share that, because I think that we have all had technical frustrations that leech hours out of our days.

If anyone knows of any other little tips and tricks that could save the day, I’d love to know. And, I’m sure that others would too.

Wishing you all a great day.
