NoIndex Settings

Hi Everyone,

I have read a lot about NoIndex tags and settings and they are still a bit of a mystery to to me but i noticed that I now have more pages that are excluded due to NoIndex tags despite not making any changes. After a bit of digging I have noticed that my wordpress settings have some boxes ticked which appear to automatically add NoIndex tags.

I think i need to remove these but am worried about making changes in the back office in case it causes problems.

Can anyone confirm if it is ok to uncheck the NoIndex tags and why are they checked in the first place?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Also I am sure this should be a question rather than a post but I coudn't figure out how to add the screenshot to a question. Apologies for the misuse if i should have done this differently.

Pete

Diane has given you the best options for this and more below. Follow Diane's advice she knows the most here.

Wishing you well

Don't worry Pete, you don't need to change anything.

What you want to be indexed is your posts, pages, and perhaps your categories. All those have unchecked "noindex" boxes — so they are allowed to be indexed.

Anything that has /feed after it is something you don't want to be indexed, so don't worry about that as well.

Thanks Yusuf,
How is your site going?

Same old, same old.

Hi - any URLs that have feed/ or tag or author or a page number or category within them do not need to be indexed.

They are just for classification purposes.

Only look at URLs that are simply the post name.

Thanks Diane,
Yesterday was another big learning day on WA :-).
The code side of websites is completely alien to me but whenever i have a day like yesterday I always feel like i made good progress at the end of it. I definitely know more than i did yesterday and while i now realize that URLs with "feed" are not needed it did lead to me finding a post that had not been indexed so it was worth the work.

Thanks again
Pete

I have also noticed that all of the posts that are excluded due to noindex have a url that ends with /feed/

When i check the page in Google search console i notice that they all have an extra line

X-Robots-Tag: noindex

What is causing them to all have the extra /feed/ part in teh url?

Thanks Abie, I thought that and i have now found 1 or 2 that also appear to be indexed but without the /feed/ string, so I now see that these ones are duplicated, But i also have some that are not indexed without the /feed/ string and i am confused on this.
Cheers

Hi Abie,
Once i went through them I had one that was a standard post URL, i was sure that this been indexed previously but i must have missed it.

I also had a couple of /category/ extensions - Should i be trying to get my categories indexed as I am not sure on these?

Cheers
Pete
