New Direction
Having worked as an accountant for almost 35 years, I'm more than ready for a new path. I've had quite a few jobs during my career. One reason I chose accounting as my college major is that I knew that there is always a need for an accountant, and I was right. Where I live, though, the job market is like feast or famine. But I've never stayed unemployed for very long, so I've been fortunate.
At my age, I want something new. Not that I haven't tried new things before; I did a stint of two and a half years teaching Business courses at a career college, among other unusual things. My current job, at which I've been for almost two years now, is strictly accounting. The job itself is okay. I don't like my boss, for many reasons. I am ready to get out of that situation as soon as possible. That's one of the reasons I am so happy that I found WA.
My first goal was to become a Premium member. My second goal was to get my first site up and running. I have achieved those goals, albeit in reverse order. My third goal is to quit my current job within six months. I would prefer to achieve that one much sooner than six months. After leaving this job, I would work at a job that I enjoy. I'm underpaid as it is now. I'd rather be underpaid and do something I like than be underpaid and treated the way I'm treated at this job. But I try to be positive about it. I try to think of it not so much as leaving an unpleasant situation as just moving ahead into something better.
Ever since I was a little child, I wanted to work from home. I never liked the idea of going somewhere else to spend the day working. Fortunately for people like me, technology has evolved to the point where it is possible to do just that. Discovering WA a few weeks ago lifted my spirits and gave me hope. Becoming a Premium member has sparked a desire in me, a desire to learn and grow and achieve. I feel as though I have been given yet another chance.
I've always loved to write, and I believe that I am an excellent writer. I know it will take time for me to hone my online skills, but it will happen.
One of my former colleagues in the career college business, an English teacher who made it up through the administrative ranks until, like me, she was doing a job she could do but wasn't really her calling, recently quit her job. She and her husband, who worked at the same school, both quit. They did it gradually, giving ample notice. I asked them what they were going to do (he is old enough for Social Security but she is in her early fifties), and she told me they were going to be working on a book. Well, I didn't push for more information, but I know that you can't really make a living working on a book, unless you're an established author and get a healthy advance.
So, I recently texted her and asked her about teaching courses online. In her response, she mentioned that she is managing a webpage. Hmmm... Again, I didn't press for more information. I'm surmising that she and her husband (who is very computer savvy) set up a website and grew it to the point where they are earning enough to live on. If that's the case, their website probably has something to do with their religion, in which they are very active. I'll probably find out more later.
Their situation gives me hope and inspires me. If they can do it, I know I can.
