Creating Space for New Business

My last blog post on here was on how to successfully return from vacation. It sounds weird but it can be difficult to get back into the routine of life. There's usually post-vacation catch-up to do and a blogging schedule or home-business can easily get put to the side so it's important to plan for how to get back to work.

Last year, from March on, it seems like I was going or coming, preparing or catching up and finding it difficult to keep up! I'm not complaining. I enjoy traveling. A few of the trips were for my job and others were for pleasure or a combo of both but when we returned home on December 28th, I have to say that I was glad to put the suitcase away into a closet for a spell.

So where have I been? Well with all the traveling and the holidays and all, my house had turned into a sort of storage area than living space! I decided that in order to get back to work, I needed to make a little space and take a little time to set goals and get my house and all my ducks in order.

I bought a really good planner/goal setter book and sat down to do some serious soul searching. I looked back over last year to see what I had accomplished and looked forward to this year, set goals for what I want to accomplish this year. And then, to begin the year, to welcome new energy into my house and office and new experiences and new goals, I did a major houseclean.

I mean CLEAN. I gave myself the entire first month of this year to get organized and I am proud to say that I am 98% finished! About an hour more work to do and it's done. Even my office is complete. I spent one day working on the office and a little voice spoke to me and said "cut the office in half."

Seriously, I'm mot sure why I thought that, but I decided to go with it. If I want something new in my life, I have to do something new and make space for something new so even though it was a daunting task, I tore the place apart. Drawers, closets, everything is reorganized. It feels really good! What's better, it feels really good to have accomplished that first goal for 2016.

For folks to who follow the Law of Attraction, this purging of past clutter is referred to as "creating a vacuum." Feng Shui advocates are big into de-cluttering in order to have more freedom of movement of energy in your home and life. Whatever you choose to call it, I recommend the freedom of space in your life!

A final word of advice: if you decide that you too would like some space in your life, be careful of the all-or-nothing syndrome. It's easy to take on a huge task like this and instead of creating a feel-good, got-the-goal scenario create the opposite -- a feeling of overwhelm and a huge task that never gets completed. That's why I gave myself a month to do this house.

But I also gave myself clear, small goals so that I did not create overwhelm. I did a corner, 2 drawers, some specific space and then stopped for the day. On days when there was no way to do a corner because it would be too much, I set a timer and did a specific time and then stopped and just did that day after day until it was done. If you jump headlong into it and work until midnight on it after work, you'll never repeat that the next day. Make the goal achievable for you, not for superman!

I'm looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow!
