A Rose By Any Other Name - Domain Naming

Years ago I had an idea that I believed many others would also appreiate. I had selected the title of this endevour, naming it Story Wars. The concept at it's core is a literary contest where by the contestants submit short stories based on offered ideas or scenarios. Winners are picked based on common criteria with the winner recieving a prize.

This, at least to me, seemed like something others would want to do. I talked to people in my circle and recieved less interest than I wanted. So I shelved the idea, let it marrinate for several years and tried again with different people and got the same results. So now, I have started again with a different crowd. I started a website this time to help me biuld the idea even more and reach greater numbers of potentially interested individuals.

As I was setting up the website I ran into a snag. My brand name was taken. I couldnt believe it I was not only unable to get traction early on, and now the name for the brand I was trying to create was already being used.

I did some research into this other website only to find out that it was truly not being used. It was bought and being sold by a domain brokerage. A silver lining, I think not. As I queried the brokerage concerning the name I recieved a quoted price of $20,000. Yes, you see that correctly that is $20k. Needless to say I was a bit taken aback at the extra zeros. So, I responded in turn questioning the broker as to the nature of this price. I truly wanted to know why it would cost me so much to acquire it.

"It is a premium domain name" is the initial answer i was given. I pushed a little further and recieved another answer. "There have been several inquiries into this name which has the seller holding out for the best price" And, a little further I get a link to an article addressing the decline of good domain names.

So what's in a name? Amazon, Wal-mart, Sears, these are brands that were grown from the ground up. Much like what we are doing now. It did not happen over night and took a lot of hardwork at times.

I hope this will help some of you who may be having a hard time finding a niche name or are running into the same thing I am, a name that some one is holding hostage for a large profit.
