Hypnosis myths

You are feeling sleepy!! (Quick! Don't look into his eyes!)

I have just joined WA, and not too sure what this blog feature is mainly for. I saw a blog about hypnosis and so as this is my specialist area I thought I would like to write something too. I very much hope to develop an online business in the personal development and fitness areas.

As a little background, I first qualified in NLP and then in hypnotherapy in the 1990s. I am currently adding a new hypnosis qualification to update my skills, and well, because it's just so much fun!

There is a lot of misunderstanding about what hypnosis is. For example it is not about becoming unconscious. Many people still think that if they go into hypnosis they will be unconscious and not remember what happened (amnesia). The part about unconscious is really not true. In fact if you were unconscious you would not be able to respond to the hypnotist's suggestions. In my experience, beer is far more effective than hypnosis for producing unconsciousness.

Another myth is that the hypnotist has power over the person hypnotised. I wish this were true. If this was true I would make an appointment with my bank manager and hypnotise them to give me a lot of free money.

What about stage hypnosis, I hear you ask. Surely no one wants to hop around like a chicken? Well, why did they go to the show? They are there with the expectation that these amusing behaviours will take place. The stage hypnotist will also spend a long time taking people through suggestibility tests in order to select the best candidates for hi/her show.

The last myth I will mention briefly is that hypnosis is real...

Huh?

Yes, strange but true, this is a debate in hypnosis circles as well as academic circles. This does not affect the ability of hypnotherapists to do really good work helping people. Perhaps that indicates the meaning of the expression, 'that's academic'!!

I enjoy writing, especially about this topic area, if you have any questions please ask and I will do my best to answer.

Awesome Post and right on. Having been a practicing hypnotherapist for the past 5 years myself I have to chuckle when I tell someone what I do and then they refuse to look me in the eyes. Heck if I wanted to hypnotize them I could do it anyway covertly and quickly, but being a person of extremely high ethical standards that just is not in me. But rapid induction is a technique that anyone in this field should study.

A friend of mine is one of the headline hypnotists in Las Vegas and I love going to see his show, and have been on stage with him as a subject, of course, I know this stuff is real and that it works but had to laugh myself at some of the ridiculous things I did on stage, yes if your friend is a stage hypnotist and you go on stage you are most likely to end up the star of that show. Of course, the video of the show now remains locked up in my safe.

Well, since you're an expert on deep meditation and such...do you have any tips for achieving it?

Nice blog. I study hypnosis for a year. I wanted to learn self-hypnosis and before I knew it a year had gone by and I received my certificate. I have always like it but just practice with family and friends. I have had some people who fell asleep during hypnosis and even snore and they still get results from it. You are correct "hypnosis is real". Today it is even being used in the medical field during surgery.

In the past too, Pete, some of the early mesmerists would do operations (this was the 1800s) with just trance. Including (according to the evidence) removing scrotal growths...so they must have been pretty good at what they did!

Nice blog, very informative, I think we both have a love and passion for the wonderful thing called hypnosis

Thanks StenT, yes, agreed!

I like to do deep meditation. I love it. If you like this kinda of topic then hopefully you could develop it into a self help niche and maybe even create your own pdf to sell. Best of wishes to You.

Hi Sherion, thank you, yes I did run a website about meditation for a couple of years. I have done some training with both Zen and Theravada Buddhist teachers in the UK. It's a daily must for me. I hadn't thought of it as a niche, so many thanks!
