Getting content FROM content

When I started the training here I was worried that I would run out of ideas to write about. That's about the worst thing that could possibly happen when our marketing efforts rely on our ability to continually create new and engaging content. I thought, "How am I ever going to create enough content to be competitive? Where are the ideas supposed to come from?"

I was in for one heck of a surprise once I got going!

The idea for that first post came quickly, and the content flowed pretty easily. The second post topic took me a few minutes to come up with, but the content still flowed. When I came around to finding ideas for the third post it took a while, and I thought, "Oh no! Out of ideas already. This is bad." But I finally figured out what to write about. And once I had that idea, the words came easily.

It was while writing that third post that I really had my breakthrough. I was writing the second section. After mentioning something that is completely routine for me I realized that others may need to know more about it. I could write a whole post based on that one sentence!

So I continued writing, and shock of shocks, five paragraphs later it happened again! One simple sentence, and I had given myself a topic for another post!

Now I keep a notepad and pen beside my computer as I write content. I haven't written a single post since that third one that I didn't get at least two topic ideas for other posts. That notepad is my new best friend. I just type away on whatever I'm writing about, and when I write that magic sentence that stops me in my tracks with alarms going off in my head screaming "IDEA!", that wonderful little notepad is there to capture the idea before I lose it.

Kyle mentions in one of the lessons that you can go back through your old content to find new ideas and places to create internal links. But with a simple notepad and pen handy while I write, I don't need to go back and search for ideas. I can record them while the thought is fresh. I can put a little more beside that topic idea that says "Link this post to POST TITLE", and I'm good to go!

I thought this might be a nice tip for everyone, and a little encouragement for anyone just getting started who is worried about running out of ideas. Don't worry. You won't run out of ideas. Every time you write you will give yourself new ideas.

So just keep writing!

Yep, with you on that one Nathan I do the same it certainly helps with the flow of ideas. -Age-

It has certainly helped me stock up enough ideas to keep going for... Well, just about forever!

Sound advice Nathan, The ideas will flow I usually have a google sheet open where I record the ideas when they come to me. works a treat thanks for sharing your insights much appreciated.

Thanks for reading! I tried the computer notepad idea, but for some reason the pen and paper work better for me. Maybe it's the visual reminder. "Hey! Over here! Take notes!"

I do the notebook things as well I guess I need heaps of reminders.

Whatever gets the job done, right? :)
