I don´t know about you, but I feel it's always very good to have a glossary in one place about what words mean, not only in online work but in other areas as well.

To few times I take a time to delete sites that I, for many reason, don´t wanted to keep.
I did it today with one site that is no longer in use because the company, unfortunately, after many years of mostly good work didn´t now make it, sad story.

I was even lucky because I had bought from them without knowing, but with good help and no problems, I managed to get it back. My bank owns that credit 100%.

So today, I was looking over posts from them that I had bookmarked to delete them. And then I found one that I had forgotten! There was a long list about what the words mean, what a 404 page is, what a grey hat is (especially for us who aren´t in the USA), etc.

As the company isn´t working anymore, I can´t see why I can´t post it here.

301 Redirect

Definition: A permanent movement of a URL's link equity.

Context: When you want to change a link permanently and let Google know.

307 Redirect

Definition: A temporary adjustment of a URL's direction.

Context: For moving one page to another, temporarily.

404 Page

Definition: When a page is not found and you aren't redirected to anything relevant.

Context: When an article directs you to a link and you land on a blank page, this is usually a 404 error page.

Above The Fold

Definition: The top of a web page, precisely what is visible before you perform any scroll when you first land on a website.

Context: If a web page was folded into 4 parts, the top part you first see is the ‘above the fold' part.

Ad Creatives

Definition: The images or video used alongside text to create an ad.

Context: You will need to have multiple ad creatives for the same ad in order to test the performance of each.

Affiliate Link

Definition: A link that contains affiliate tracking data, usually containing “ref=affID” in the URL.

Context: When you are asked to place your “affiliate links” inside your blog.

Affiliate Network

Definition: A company/website that allows publishers to find advertisers and advertisers to attract publishers.

Context: The Amazon Associates program is not an affiliate network because you are only dealing with Amazon. Whereas, Clickbank is a place with many vendors and would be considered an affiliate network.

Affiliate Program

Definition: An internal segment of a company that interacts with publishers to provide them with the tools necessary to sell more of the company's products.

Context: The Amazon Associates program is one of the longest standing affiliate programs in the world, starting in 1996.

ALT Tags

Definition: Used to help people with blindness to describe images (short for Alternative Tags).

Context: Put an ALT tag into the image to make it more accessible for everyone.

Amazon Associates

Definition: Amazon's affiliate program, which allows people to earn commissions based on referral sales inside Amazon. Such sales happen when you refer someone to Amazon via an affiliate link and they make a purchase within 24 hours.

Context: Join the Amazon affiliate program, it's how I'll monetize my blog by recommending products.

Amazon OneLink

Definition: A tool (and code) from Amazon that allows you to complete geotargeting for it's affiliate links.

Context: Amazon OneLink allows a reader to click a link and be directed to their respective Amazon sites. Currently, only the US, Canada, and UK have the ability to redirected towards.

Anchor Text

Definition: The text that is displayed in a hypertext link (commonly only called “links”) that, when clicked, will lead the user to the target page.

Context: I applied an anchor text to the word “click here”.

ASIN

Definition: Amazon Standard Identification Numbers (ASINs) that are unique to every single product on their platform.

Context: I needed the ASIN to add into my plugin. It now finds this certain product from Amazon for me to promote.

Autoresponder

Definition: A simple or complex set of emails send from your email service provider. They can be as simple as “thank you” or can be a complex marketing series.

Context: You will often find yourself in an internet marketers autoresponder campaign after you request a free lead magnet.

Avatar

Definition: The characteristics and representations of your perfect customer.

Context: Marketers are imagining their customer avatar when they are writing content on their blog or their email list.

Backlinks

Definition: Links from other websites that point back to your site.

Context: Backlinks come from other websites and they send website traffic to my site as referrals.

Black Hat SEO

Definition: The usage of illegal or otherwise shady and morally arguable tactics to raise your search engine rankings higher.

Context: The hacker broke into my friends website and added a link back to his competitors.

Bounce Rate

Definition: The percentage of visitors who leave your site, after only visiting that page alone. They either press the back button or they close the tab.

Context: I bounced off that page so fast, it wasn't providing me with what I needed immediately.

Brandable Domain Name

Definition: A website that is name that is distinct and allows the site to grow into.

Context: I named my site WorkSmarter instead of HelmetReviews.com.

Broken Link

Definition: When a link leads to a blank page that has no content, a 404 page, an expired website or a non-existing source.

Context: “I clicked on this broken link and it took me to a blank 404 page. It sucked!”.

BSR

Definition: Amazon's Best Seller Rank. How Amazon orders their most popular products.

Context: A BSR of 1 is the best selling product in a category.

Cache

Definition: Cache is data stored on your computer to make load times quicker.

Context: I cleared the cache on my browser to make space.

Clickbank

Definition: An affiliate network that allows digital and physical products to be sold through their hosted shopping cart.

Context: Clickbank allows people to sell products on their platform and have affiliates signup to promote any product on their marketplace.

Clickbank Gravity

Definition: An indication that a product has many affiliates earning commissions.

Context: A high gravity score means there are many affiliates pushing the product and making money. A low gravity score means that the product isn't tested enough and affiliates aren't earning commissions for some reason. This could be due to the conversion rate of the sales page or the product could be new. There are several factors for both high and low gravity for a clickbank product.

Clickbank Vendor

Definition: The creator of the product or service available on Clickbank.

Context: Vendors create products and use Clickbank as their shopping cart and affiliate platform.

Cloaking

Definition: When affiliate links that are too long are shortened and made to look more attractive for readers.

Context: People will use cloaking for their affiliate links so it doesn't scare away potential clicks.

CMS

Definition: A content management system (CMS) allows you to create and modify content in an easy-to-use interface.

Context: WordPress is the content management system most Amazon affiliate sites use.

Content

Definition: How you convey your message to an audience. Can be in the form of video, audio, or written text.

Context: All of my blog posts, emails, and videos are for building my audience using content.

Content Aggregator

Definition: A person or company that puts together various sets of information into a digestible manner.

Context: Affiliate sites are often content aggregators because we research important topics to our audience in order to gain a commission on a recommendation.

Conversion Rate

Definition: A ratio for the number of times a specific action was taken. Usually in the form of a purchase or email signup.

Context: When someone reaches your thank you page for signing up to your email list, they are increasing your conversion rate.

Cookie

Definition: A data file that is left on your computer from a specific website you are visiting.

Context: A web cookie with your affiliate I.D. is left on the user's computer, so that if they purchase during the specified period – you'll get the commission.

CPA

Definition: Cost Per Action (or Acquisition): When an advertising pays for a specific action taken from a user. Usually a sign up, email registration, or sale.

Context: The CPA for email signups were $5 each. Meaning if I collected 10 leads for the advertiser, they would pay me $50.

CPC

Definition: Cost Per Click: a metric typically used on advertisement/paid traffic. It refers to the cost an advertiser pays for each click of their advertisement. See also PPC.

Context: The CPC for lawyers can be very high because the fees that lawyers charge clients outweighs the benefit for paying a higher price per lead.

CPM

Definition: Cost Per Thousand: A metric used for advertisers to pay for per 1000 impressions of their ads.

Context: A blog that gets 200,000 visitors a month to their homepage can expect $400 if the advertiser is willing to pay $2 for each thousandth impression.

CRO

Definition: Conversion Rate Optimization. It refers to actively adjust and test an element or group of elements in order to increase the Conversion Rate of a page.

Context: People often apply conversion rate optimization to their sales pages by testing different videos.

CSS

Definition: Cascading Style Sheet: the way you style groups of HTML elements. Allowing you to apply one standard “style” to a certain group of HTML segments across your entire website.

Context: You can use HTML to create a paragraph of text but apply CSS to format the look of the text and turn it into a table.

CTR

Definition: Click Through Rate: The ratio (or percentage) of people that clicked a certain link vs. those who saw it.

Context: Click through rates are higher for sites ranking from 1 to 3. With the first usually having the highest click through rate.

Domain Authority

Definition: MOZ's main SEO metric. It's a numeral value in the 0 to 100 range, 0 being the lowest and 100 the highest, which reflects the “authority” or ranking power of a given domain name based on the amount of links pointing to that domain (in MOZ's database).

Context: When researching niches, picking keywords, or doing competitor analysis try to look at the Domain Authority and how they compare to your own. If you're a brand new domain then competitors would be less than a Domain Authority of 20.

Domain Registrar

Definition: The company from which you'll purchase a domain name from.

Context: The registrar is a company such as NameCheap, GoDaddy, or SiteGround and you'll purchase a domain name from them. They are between you (the registrant) and the Registry, which keeps track of all domains.

Drip Campaign

Definition: A series of emails you deliver to an email subscriber that is meant to nurture them into becoming a customer.

Context: A drip campaign can span a few days to many months. They can be very generic or can be high targeted based on the specific lead magnet the subscriber showed interest in.

Ecommerce Shopping Cart

Definition: A virtual shopping basket that allows you to save items that you are considering purchasing.

EMD

Definition: Exact match domain, this is a website which its name is the exact keyword it tries to rank for (example: bestsurvivalknife.com).

Context: Exact match domains are no longer favourable to site owners, in the eyes of Google. However, it does not hurt you. It's simply doesn't affect your rankings from their perspective. Although EMD's do not provide brandability for your site.

ESP

Definition: Email Service Provider: Allows you to send and manage email contacts. This can be paid or free.

Context: Gmail is a free email service provider, but G-Suite is a paid email service provider. Paid ESPs usually entail the ability to send automated email campaigns (also known as an Autoresponder).

External Link

Definition: A link on a given website that will lead the user to a different website or external source.

Context: You can add an external link to a great resource that would be beneficial to the readers of your content.

Facebook Pixel

Definition: A piece of code that is placed on your website that allows you to build a list of site visitors that are held on the Facebook platform.

Context: The Facebook pixel is used mainly for retargeting site visitors on Facebook. It's the code that allows you to follow up with site visitors without immediately asking them for their contact information.

FAQ

Definition: Frequent Answers and Questions: A compilation of the most frequent or likely to happen questions around a product/service.

Context: Each website that sells a product will have an FAQ section to overcome sales objections.

Featured Image

Definition: The main image used on a blog post/page that serves to describe or illustrate the contents of that article.

Context: Each blog post in WordPress has a featured image that will be used as the thumbnail.

Featured Snipper

Definition: Also known as “position 0”, this is Google's way of providing an answer directly in the search results. The text and image can be from completely different sources as well. Meaning the text you read and link you see may not be from the same content that the image is from.

Context: The featured snippet now gets the highest visitor traffic from Google, previously it was the result that was ranking number one at the top.

Footer Menu

Definition: A menu that appears at the bottom of your site.

Context: The footer menu does not have to be an exact replicate of the primary menu at the top. They can have different links.

Geolocation

Definition: The location of an internet connection, either your own or your leads.

Context: If you have geolocation turned on, when a visitor clicks on your Amazon affiliate link they will be taken to their respective Amazon sites (US, Canada, UK, etc.) to purchase.

Google Analytics

Definition: A free application that allows you to track a large amount of metrics from your website.

Context: Google Analytics will tell you how many visitors came to your site, where they went, how long they stayed and much more.

Google Penalty

Definition: A penalty that Google applied to your website either through a manual check or through an adjustment of their search algorithm.

Context: Google penalties come from manual reviews from Google employees and algorithm adjustments such as Penguin, Hummingbird, & Panda.

Google Search Console

Definition: A free tool for analyzing your sites performance on Google's search engine. Providing keywords you rank for, information on the pages indexed, and any crawl errors that they are seeing on their end.

Context: Google search console is mostly used to see which keywords you are currently ranking for and is generally much faster at providing this data than paid rank trackers. However, it only holds information for 90 days.

Gray Hat SEO

Definition: SEO tactics that are unclear based on the terms of service that Google has laid out.

Context: Gray Hat SEO falls in between Black Hat and White Hat. You can get penalized under any SEO hat, however with Gray Hat tactics you'll be wandering towards the offences that have already been proven to be unwanted by Google.

Guest Post

Definition: The act of writing a new article for a site that you don't own.

Context: Guest posting is link building technique whereby you place links back to your site by creating content for other people's sites.

Guru

Definition: A teacher, counselor or guide. In the world of Internet Marketing however, it is typically used in a derogative way to refer to individuals who allegedly exploit their followers' naiveté for economic purposes.

Context: Internet marketing guru's teach about making money online in some capacity. It could be with affiliate commissions, ad revenue, physical product sales, and information product sales.

H Tags

Definition: Header Tags: An HTML code that tells search engines which part of your text is the main title (H1), sub titles (H2), and subheadings (H3).

Context: I wrapped my blogs title around an H1 tag. WordPress makes this very easy. You just highlight the text and select the header tag you'd like to apply.

HTML

Definition: HyperText Markup Language: The code that is used to build your sites foundation. This would be the paragraphs, headers, menus, images and links.

Context: HTML is the skeleton of your website and CSS is used to make that skeleton formatted for aesthetics.

IFTTT

Definition: If This Then That: A web service that is used to connect different apps on the web to each other.

Context: You can create an IFTTT formula to post your new blog posts on twitter automatically. There are thousands of ways to connect apps with IFTTT.

Image Optimization

Definition: It refers to reducing an image's size and weight to the very minimum needed to be displayed properly on a website without re-sizing, so that it has minimal impact on site speed.

Context: You want to optimize your images for size in both pixels and kilobytes to increase your sites speed and reduce slow load times.

Inbound Link

Definition: An incoming link to a website from an external source (the result from an external link).

Context: Inbound links are considered the most important ranking factor for any website. They can be considered a vote towards your website.

Infographic

Definition: A graphic that provides a visual representation for data and information that is pleasing for the reader to consume quickly.

Context: Infographic are created to help readers absorb information from your site in a branded way.

Informational Articles

Definition: A piece of content that is aimed to solve a particular question or provide guidance for a topic, such as “what is xyz, how to xyz, when to xyz” to name a few.

Context: Information articles are used to answer questions or show your readers how to do a certain task.

Internal Link

Definition: A link within your website that will lead the user to a different section/article/element inside the same web property.

Context: Internal links are used to guide your readers to different parts of your website for convenience.

Keyword

Definition: A word (or combination of words) used in a search query to retrieve information from a search engine.

Context: Keywords are the words and phrases that people type into Google's search bar. SEO affiliate marketing stems from good research on these queries.

Keyword Difficulty

Definition: A metric that indicates the approximate difficulty in order to rank for that keyword search. Each keyword tool creates this metric based on their own proprietary data.

Context: Keyword tools create a keyword difficulty score in order to help people filter through potential keywords to target.

Keyword Stuffing

Definition: Unnecessary and artificially forced repetitions of a keyword or its variations inside of a piece of content.

Context: When you add in your target keyword into your article for every paragraph. It's an unnatural addition to your content.

Landing Page

Definition: A page in which a conversion is necessary for the success of the page. Either in asking for an email address or purchase of a product or service. The page is asking for a commitment of some sort.

Context: A landing page is often used to capture email address in exchange for a free download, free trial, or company update for launch promotions.

Lead Magnet

Definition: An offer to exchange something valuable for the contact information of your site visitor.

Context: You will create lead magnets based on popular topics that you know your leads would find irresistible.

Link Beg

Definition: A tactic of asking other webmasters to link to your site.

Context: Usually applied by online marketers to ask fellow site owners in their niche to adapt an old piece of content and add your own content because it is more relevant or updated.

Link Building

Definition: A campaign for attracting or building links manually to your site.

Context: Link building is a concern for many website builders as this is considered the best way to rank your site higher with the least effort.

Link Juice

Definition: Also known as: link authority & link equity. The effectiveness or power of a certain link. Based on factors such as the sites domain authority, page authority, and also the number of links pointing to that certain page in which link juice is passed from.

Context: Link juice is passed over when a do-follow link is given from your site to another. The larger your domain is in terms of Domain Authority, the more powerful a link from your site would be to another's.

List Building

Definition: The act of actively pursuing the capture of emails or leads (typically in exchange for a lead magnet) to grow an email list.

Context: Asking visitors to submit their email address to your site through a pop up for free training is one form of list building.

Long Tail Keywords

Definition: A statistical term to convey that a large number of important search queries are further away from the original search. Meaning they have more commercial value.

Context: A searcher may end up at the long tail term of “best shaver for cutting beards”, whereas they originally were searching for “shavers” alone. The long tail caters to more specific and actionable keywords near the commercial end of search.

LSI Keywords

Definition: Latent Semantic Indexing: The system that Google applies to organize search data. Whereby one search is extremely correlated to with another based on the similarity of their search terms.

Context: LSI keywords are a way to avoid keyword stuffing by applying related terms or synonyms in replacement of your main keyword to avoid a Google penalty.

Meta Description

Definition: A summary of what's displayed on your page through an HTML code.

Context: You can use various SEO wordpress tools to add in a meta description. Meta descriptions are usually what you'd see in the description area of the Google search results. Although Google does not always pick up the meta description and add it as the description. The search engine could replace your meta description if they think a snippet of your pages content would serve the user better.

Money Page

Definition: A piece of content that is monetized in some fashion, such as promoting products as an affiliate, capturing leads to sell them to a 3rd party or heavy advertisement.

Context: A money page is usually used in conjunction with supporting pages. Where you constantly trying to direct traffic from your supporting pages to your money page. Where you plan to monetize your site visitors.

Money Site

Definition: A website dedicated to generate revenue, be it via advertisement, sponsored posts, or affiliate commissions.

Context: Your money site would be the main web property that generates a significant portion of your online income. You may own other properties but your money site is where you want to direct all of your traffic from those other properties. Money sites are often where you'd point links from your PBN towards. Since the PBNs are meant to gather and send link juice to your money site.

Moz

Definition: A software business that sells search engine marketing subscriptions.

Context: Moz has a suite of software tools for us to become better at ranking Amazon affiliate sites.

Online Sales Funnel

Definition: The way in which you connect multiple parts of the customer journey.

Context: How you attract a new lead, nurture them, and convert them into a paying customer.

Opt-in

Definition: The area on a website that explicitly asks for a visitors contact information.

Context: You can place an opt-in that asks for your visitors email in exchange for a lead magnet.

Organic Traffic

Definition: Web traffic coming to a given website as a result of that website's search engine rankings.

Context: When you are doing any sort of SEO, it is to raise your organic traffic and rankings.

Outbound Link (OBL)

Definition: When a link redirects you to another website that is not the original one you are currently on.

Context: An affiliate site should have plenty of outbound links as this is very natural for other websites to have.

Outreach

Definition: A white hat SEO tactic for contacting other websites and businesses to begin a relationship.

Context: Outreach can occur when you promote a piece of content to your audience directly through contacting them through a form or email.

Paid Traffic

Definition: Web traffic coming to a given website as a result of a direct exchange of money for traffic, such as PPC campaigns, email list rentals, sponsored posts and other paid strategies.

Context: Paid traffic can be thought of as a water faucet, when you want some traffic you'll turn on the paid advertising to get website visitors.

PBN

Definition: Private Blog Network: A conglomerate of websites whose sole purpose is to funnel authority through outbound links towards one specific site, known as the “money site”.

Context: Many PBNs are composed of old domains that have aged authority. PBN owners use their PBNs to raise search rankings to their benefit.

PHP

Definition: PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. The code system WordPress works from.

Context: WordPress developers have to understand PHP in order to create WordPress plugins.

PMD

Definition: Partial Match Domain: a website which its name partially contains the main keyword it tries to rank for (example: target keyword “best survival knife” url “survivalknifeguide.com”).

Context: PMDs are extremely useful to use as they are more branded and also allow you to speak to your target audience immediately.

PPC

Definition: Pay Per Click: In the world of affiliate marketing, it refers to traffic that is acquired through a direct exchange of money per each click. The advertiser pays for each click.

Context: PPC is how most digital advertisements are utilized. The advertiser only pays when someone clicks on the link.

Primary Menu

Definition: An assignment for your main menu in WordPress. It doesn't necessarily mean your header menu or your footer menu. It is a matter of specifying which of the other menu's is your main/primary menu.

Context: You can only have one primary menu in WordPress and most of the time it would be your header menu.

Rank

Definition: The order in which Google organizes search results.

Context: The lower the search ranking number, the better. You want to be in the 1st position as this is also known as ranking “higher” in Google in terms of your search appearance.

Referral Traffic

Definition: Traffic to a website that comes from another website, such as Facebook (via a social profile, page or group for instance).

Context: When someone adds a link back to your site and a visitor comes through from that page, it's known as referral traffic.

Retargeting

Definition: How a website follows up with site visitors to stay top of mind and hopefully have them take an action.

Context: An example would be when you look for a product on Amazon and do not purchase it, but see the advertisement for that product on another platform such as Facebook or another website.

Review Articles

Definition: Articles that are meant to monetize your website. They are usually in the form of “best straight razor” or “straight razor 1 vs straight razor 2”.

Context: Review articles are meant to provide a direction through well researched content that helps a reader make a buying decision.

Rich Cards

Definition: A carousel of rich snippets that are displayed in cards at the top of Google's search results. Whereby you can scroll through them horizontally.

Context: Rich cards are an adaptation of rich snippets for a more compact view of mobile search results.

Rich Snippets

Definition: How structured data is displayed in Google's search rankings. You would normally see things such as price, star ratings, and number of reviews.

Context: Sites with structured data benefit from rich snippets on their Google listing and benefit from higher click throughs.

ROI

Definition: Return on Investment: The measurement for success in an advertising campaign or site sale.

Context: The ROI for a website comes near the end when it is ready to be sold. It is how much you invested compared to how much you receive from the final sale and profits throughout.

SEO

Definition: Search Engine Optimization: The strategies used in marketing to get a website ranking higher in search engines.

Context: Most Amazon affiliate marketers are utilizing SEO as the foundation to build their site. Utilizing keyword research and backlink campaigns.

SERP

Definition: Search Engine Results Page: The 10 results that occur on each page of the search engine results.

Context: You want your affiliate site to rise in the SERPs through SEO tactics.

Sidebar

Definition: An area on the right or left of the page that shows widgets. These widgets are normally the same across the entire site for any pages that also contain a sidebar.

Context: A sidebar can be static or floating. Meaning when you scroll up or down the page, the sidebar will either follow you around or only stick to the top.

Silo Structure

Definition: The structuring of a website based on topics. Whereby different topics are set apart from each other. Both in the content and URL structure.

Context: A silo is composed of 1 pillar post, several supporting posts, and the URL structure is set to reflect this structure. For example, “www.YOURWEBSITE.com/travel/best-carry-on-luggage/”

Sitemap

Definition: The list of pages and posts that compose your website. It is also an electronic document that you can submit to Google Search Console so that they always know which pages to crawl.

Context: You can draft a simple sitemap plan by mindmapping the outline of pages that will appear on your site.

Skyscraper Technique

Definition: A white hat link building tactic that requires finding what's popularly being linked to and creating a better resource for it. Then reaching out to the sites that have linked to that subject and asking them to link to your content piece.

Context: Use the skyscraper technique when you have an authoritative guide you'd like to start a link building campaign around.

Social Fortress

Definition: A set of social profiles in which you link towards your site from.

Context: A term coined by Matt Diggity on creating a network of social accounts that link back to your site because it is the natural progression of a trust worthy site.

SOP

Definition: Standard Operating Procedures: A set of instructions to describe a certain task for an employer or contractor.

Context: You should create SOPs for every aspect of your business that you have to do twice. This helps to delegate those tasks in the future.

Squeeze page

Definition: A web page in which the visitor has only two options: convert or abandon. The whole page is dedicated to convince the visitor to take the target action (conversion) such as purchase or opt-in, and there are no links or options to do any other action different than that one.

Context: Often times confused with a landing page, whereas a landing page may have more information on it – a squeeze page is much shorter and compact. Meant to drive the visitor to convert or leave.

Support pages

Definition: Pieces of content surrounding a pillar article or money page. The purpose is to funnel traffic from all of the supporting pages back to the pillar page where you are looking for a specific conversion. Usually an affiliate commission.

Context: Support pages are meant to target relevant keywords in the same subject as the pillar/money page.

Theme

Definition: A styled template in which you can overlap your website on. It's the template for your websites design.

Context: There are thousands of free WordPress themes for you to try out on your site. WordPress also loads a few free ones in your standard installation.

Tiered Link Building

Definition: A way of utilizing high Domain Authority Web 2.0 properties to build a network of sites for pointing links back to your site. Then pointing less credible links to the web 2.0 sites in order to pass link juice to your main site.

Context: Tiered link building is a gray hat SEO tactic that works but would not likely pass a manual review from Google.

TLDR

Definition: Too Long Didn't Read: The summarized version of your post.
