Learning About Marketing on the Beach

First off, let me just mention I've been gone for a while and explain where I've been. For a week I was a camp counselor at an outdoor camp. It was a very rewarding experience and I had a lot of fun. You can read more about it in one of my past blogs. This weekend (which was immediately following my return) I was at the coast for the fourth of July.
Now I'm back and ready to work hard on my website again. Plus, believe it or not I actually learned something about marketing when I was at the coast.
Sunday afternoon I toured an old lighthouse which was a lot of fun. Afterwards, I went to a small beach in the same area. This was a very small beach that was past a gate you had to pay to get through (to get to the lighthouse) which made the beach even smaller.
When my family and I were down there we were the only ones. However, I got this random idea to write my website URL in the sand. The writing in the sand thing was my idea, but the concept of doing things like that came from Jay's webinar on offline traffic sources in which he mentions guerilla marketing.

I made it visible from the path leading down to the beach. Right when I made it I left the beach, but in the time it took me to walk up the path to the parking lot (something like 120 seconds) I saw two separate groups of people heading down, both check out my URL.
Those people didn't just glance at the sand URL, they examined it. They read what it said and then look at it curiously for another moment. One even pulled out their phone, possibly to jot down the URL or visit it.
That's when I realized how genius guerilla marketing can be. In some ways it can be better than actual advertising. It's so out of the ordinary people stop and really pay attention to it. Best of all, all of that attention is free.
I'm definitely going to start doing more guerilla marketing. One thing I will probably do is get some business cards and figure out fun guerilla marketing tactics with those. Once I get my license next month I will be able to explore on my own and find good ways of doing this.
If you haven't checked out Jay's webinar yet I highly recommend it. He gives some cool examples of this type of marketing.
