First Amazon Commission
I got my first Amazon sale yesterday. A whole 97p, But it was my first Amazon sale and I had been hoping to get one as I've nearly been an affiliate with them for three months and heard they cut you off if you don't get a sale.
I was surprised because on average the site is only on page 5, it's a couple of months old. Although that particular page was that got the sale page 2 I think. My older site, (3 months) hasn't had a sale since the first couple of weeks, but I think traffic in general would be low even if I was on page 1 because of the niche, (it's on average on page 2). I think both sales have been a bit of a fluke really.
I think the most recent site could move up in the search if I made some changes and dedicated the time to adding plenty of posts. I've slowed down recently because I haven't been motivated by the niche and website and it's very product based so, lots of affiliate links which probably won't help my ranking. There are other niches now that I have in mind, (now being further down the road in this game and after learning more) that I think would suit me better, that I could rank more quickly for and that I'd be pleased to spend more time on.
But to have the time to dedicate to it, I'd probably need to let at least one of my sites go on the back burner. Which is a tough decision to make after all the time I've spent on them.
I'm thinking I will try and focus harder on the new on for the next month or so and then make a decision. I'd like to get the new one up to a decent amount of posts and pages before I make a decision.
As you can probably tell - even though this is a success post, I've felt a bit down recently. Because I feel like I could have used my time on one site I'd been really passionate about from the start and I'd have one site with a large number of pages and posts right now.
But.... it's all a learning curve!!

Congrats! Last year I created some social sites (like pinterest, etc) on a few niches. All year I received a little (I mean little) commissions from Amazon. The fun part is that some of the products I did not even promote. Because of the way Amazon cookies, I received commissions on other stuff!
Yeh that is a definite bonus for it. This time is was actually for the product I was promoting, unfortunately no additional purchases this time lol :)
You are right NEH. It is all a learning curve. I feel like I need to do so many things to my sit, but there is never enough hours a day. Keep on working hard; the holiday season is upon us which should mean more sales.

Thanks Marilyn! Yep, not enough hours in the day and then unfortunately other stuff comes up -- general life stuff happening has meant I haven't added a post in around a week. Need to get back on track and get motivated now!
Congratulations Natalie on getting your first sale , sort of like an icebreaker . It is a learning curve , and easy to get over whelmed . Thank you for the reminder , if we focus on one thing at a time before moving on , we get can achieve better results . I used to be a serial side tracker , usually trying to do to many things at once and like the saying goes doing justice to none. So perhaps focus on one of your sites get it to a stage you are happy with then move on . It works for me .
I completely agree and that's certainly good advice. Better start to stick with one thing until that's successful - but it's easy to get distracted. Unfortunately the second site is high maintenance because it's image heavy and time consuming. I think I will focus on that one though, as it has more potential sale wise. I do have some other projects I'm doing aside from these sites, I need to organise my time management I think!
Congrats.
Once you get your first the rest are easy. Don't ever rely on just one method of making a sale though, remember you are on the Internet, think about how many billions of opportunites are out there, Google might be cool, but it's definitely not the be all end all in terms of sales
