Rivers Lakes Fish

I have been asked about the above and am not sure what to say here.

In the North Island we have the Waikato River which we affectionately call the Mighty Waikato. This wends its way down about 2/3rds of the North Island and meets the largest of our lakes, Lake Taupo (tow as in now poe) This river is large and has on it one of our Hydro Dams at Karapiro. This hydro scheme is popular with the tourist and overlooks the picturesque Lake Karapiro. This lake is the venue for many rowing regattas. Another river that should be mentioned is the River Avon which meanders its way through the city of Christchurch and the town of Stratford. Anyone know their Shakespeare.

With regard to lakes we obviously do not have the number or variety that I am privileged to see here in Canada but the ones we do have are truly beautiful. As mentioned the largest being Taupo and then Lake Manapouri (man a poo ree) in the South Island. This lake is directly adjacent to Queenstown a popular place for tourists and the site of one of our world class ski fields.. Another lake that is in the North Island and for some reason is not so promoted is the absolutely gorgeous Lake Waikarimoana (wy as in why carry mo as in toe arna) This is one of my favourite parts of the North Island.

While on rivers and Lakes it would be remiss of me to not mention that all are famous for fabulous Trout Fishing. Rainbow in the North Island and slightly larger Brown in the South Island. While on trout I will share an experience with you that I was privileged to see but unfortunately is no longer available. In Rotorua a popular thermal city (think of Yellowstone National Park) there was a large tourist attraction featuring trout in large water areas surrounded by wooden walkways. In here was a famous trout named Harvey. He was famous because of his distinct colouring. His front half was a distinct Pink to Red and his back half was clearly Green. People used to throw fish food in to the water and when Harvey was fed Guess what? The two colours clearly changed ends. True story

While on fish I would mention that many parts off the coasts are famous for deep sea fishing. Most of you will have heard of Zane Grey. Well he used to visit Paihia (pie he a) in the upper North island at least once a year to enjoy fishing for Marlin

That's all for this trip folks

Will you (and this said woman) ever go back? You can be a tour guide. You know a lot about the area and people like to hear little tidbits like the Zane Grey story.

Oh sure, a woman...lol...the usual..you are too funny.
Great post and thank you for sharing.

The New Zealand tourist board will want to hire you Neil.

Love the story of Harvey. Wonder what made his colors reverse in that way...

How is it you came to live in Canada with such a love for New Zealand? Was it work? I really enjoyed the story about Harvey! :)

The usual answer a woman lol

lol! Well that's a good answer if ya'll are happy! :)

Don't hit me, Neil, but I thought of one more question. Are there major differences between the north and the south island?
