Welcome to Teaching Kids Self-Esteem!

For everyone who has a child (or more) in their lives, nothing is more important than seeing them happy and well-cared for. We want to give them love, comfort, good values, enough material possessions, etc. Ideally, the love we give our children should be enough. But eventually we come to see that the ingredient fundamental to a child developing into a happy, fulfilled adult and a good human being is self-esteem, or how a person views him or herself.

I taught in public schools for thirty years in all grades from kindergarten through sixth. I spent a short time with middle-schoolers and high school students. I even taught English-as-a-Second Language to adults for one year. However, for most of those years I was a Special Education teacher in the elementary grades where I learned the value of self-image.

Children feel a sense of self-worth when they know they are readers, and when their classmates know it, too. Good reading gives every child an edge in school and throughout their lives. And that edge gives them confidence that poor readers never have, One of the most valuable tools you can give a child you love is the gift of reading.
