Back to Basics -Make my bed? What?
I have done a lot of soul searching over the past few months or rather habit searching. I have big dreams and want to see them materialize and yet here I am...paused...yet again. As a spiritualist and life coach, I often find, I am hardest on myself, however, this time I took a different approach to the downside of my ups and downs....I decide to explore the cause more thoroughly and even hired my brother as my accountability coach.
So I go into this meeting with my "Accountability Coach" ready to lay down all my dreams and goals and tell him all the things I think are the problem and knowing me so well. He simply listens. After unburying himself from the load of mentally rehearsed excuses for why I am not further ahead, he recaps everything I said. He is a great active listener. He follows that up with the sandwich approach, compliment, criticism or feedback , followed by another good point. I caught it but let him go on...He says,
"Nat, (my actual name is Natalie, but Nadany is a combination of the first 2 letters of my name and that of my kids) so he says, "Nat, it blows my mind how well you research things. I have never met anyone who researches things as thoroughly as you do. You are really good at it." Okay, but...,"You are missing discipline and you tend to take big chunks out of things all at once and then get overwhelmed." Ok he wasn't wrong. I had picked up on the pattern but handled it by starting over each time I crashed. The next thing he said, got me almost scoffing. He says, "Start small, build the habit, and know what is enough for you. You will reach your goal with consistency."
Over the years, I can tell you I am very consistent about one thing and that was getting back up after falling. But in truth it would be really great to actually achieve my goal and take a different approach. So I asked my coach, what he had in mind to achieve this. His response, " Go back to basics. Start simple. Start by making your bed every day when you get up." What? Are you kidding me???!!!! How is that supposed to help me pay off my debt, get my down payment for my dream home?????
I'll admit, I didn't see the correlation initially. When I wake up in the morning, my mind has already run though the days to do list and cruising at 100 km/hr. already. Once out I don't even look back at my bed until its time to go back to sleep in it. Besides I suck at making my bed. I used to do it as a kid all the time at my mother's insistence, but that went out the door with adulthood. None the less, I got on board.
My coach explained to me that making my bed daily was about discipline and create productive habits. No matter what happens in my day, I can check making my bed off of my do to list and that contributes good energy towards success and achievement. It also fuels that vibe into other tasks. Believe it or not, I started this several a little over 2 months ago and have made my bed ever since given the task. I also go around and fix other things as I pass by them. I realize the task isn't as daunting as it seemed to be.
Do you want to know what else I started getting done too? I get my article entries created for my blog. I am writing entries for my book. I am drawing, singing with my kids, got movie night in (after months of being asked). I get my daily prayer and meditation twice a day!!!!! I feel way more productive than I did before and can see the results of my effort.
Let's be clear, it isn't about making my bed, although I appreciate jumping into a ready made bed at night, it is more profound than that. It is about building gradual momentum. It is about showing yourself you have it in you to change, to evolve into the person you want to be and are in the near future. It is about being open to learning, if not new but different way of doing things. Going back to basics and making my bed is a daily reminder and commitment to myself that I can and will achieve my goals.
There is a part 2 to this and it the other point my coach brought up and that is-Knowing what is enough for you. I will discuss this further in another entry. 'til then, Be blessed!
Love & Light being sent your way.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with going back to basics at times Natalie, this was drummed into me at an early age (not literally though, no violence involved)!
Making my bed is basically the first thing I do each and every morning.... without doing so, I just know it will be a bad day!!!
All the very best moving forward my friend! :-)
Thanks for encouragement Jessie! :-)
Most welcome my friend! :-)
