My mistakes: WP Media and Compress Photos

I posted this as a reply to someone's WA blog but I feel this is important to share as my own WA blog.

Here at Wealthy Affiliate, it is OK to make mistakes. And here at WA, it is a very safe place to ask 'stupid' questions, in my experience I have always been treated with respect and always have received helpful answers.

Well, I made a mistake on my website and glad I did! And because I was brave enough to ask a 'stupid' question to the WA community, I discovered why I made the mistake and how to make an even better correction.

My mistake: I thought I would de-clutter my photos in my website and so, I deleted all my photos in 'MEDIA' of my WP website.

Do NOT do that. Why not?

Because your photos will no longer show up on your website.

So, I asked my 'stupid' question to the WA community:

'Why aren't my photos showing up on my website?'

It didn't take long for a reply, and because this community is so smart, several members figured out right away what mistake I had made.

Also, then members told me to make sure that I 'compress' my photos. Never heard about compressing photos. Compressing helps photos to load faster. No one likes it when they have to wait for more than a few seconds, for a photo to show up. :)

Here's an easy way to compress photos: https://tinypng.com/

TinyPNG uses smart lossy compression techniques to reduce the file size of your PNG files. And it is FREE to use. :)

When I discovered that I had made TWO mistakes, I was able to correct BOTH my mistakes.

I am so grateful for this wonderful WA community.

Like this, thanks

Well done, never would have thought of compressing photos either. xx

I agree, thanks

Hope you manage to get back all the photo images to the post.

It took me about an hour or so, but since I had saved and organized them in Dropbox, I was able to put them all back into my website. But I ate ice cream while I put them back in, one by one. :)

OK, your mistake makes more people aware of things we should know. I deleted a few large images to resize and compresss them outside before putting them back again. Quite a bit of work if we don't do from the start.

Well, it took me a long time to put back all my photos that I had deleted out of 'media' in my WP website. :)

It's those little things that will make a big difference.

I think that is what Course 1 is all about. Making sure we build a solid foundation, so we don't lose visitors, our reputation (and income) because of the little things such as slow loading of our photos, etc. And therefore, we can serve our visitors and customers better.

I do hope by sharing about my mistake, it can prevent others from making the same mistake.

This is great, thank you for sharing, and you know? I think there is no stupid question at all when you are trying to learn

This truly is an Amazing place. In school we have been taught that its NOT good to make mistakes,in the business world mistakes make you successful.

With WA,you got the right guys to help you and guide you whilst you building a business.

Myra,
I didn't know that deleting pictures in my media library would delete them on my website but it makes sense. I bet a lot of us have done this. Thanks for sharing.
Erica

Thank's for your post!! I also use a photo compression program.

Every question is a legitimate question. But thanks for posting. I didn't know that if I delete the images in my media library they won't show up anymore in my website. I didn't do it though so I didn't have that problem.
And so here's one important thing we all can do. We should not disregard someone else's question. It can be our own question and we already get answers even before we ask. Or we learn something new all the time.
Again, thanks for posting, Myra. You're doing so well!

That's why I posted this, in hopes it can help others.

Definitely!

The only 'stupid' question is the one which doesn't get asked Myra :)

Thanks, Jude. I have never been made to feel stupid by asking all my beginning 'stupid' questions. There is always someone willing to help, here at WA community, which I am so grateful.
