Is sentient AI in our future?
Technology has been advancing faster than we can cope. With the evolution of Artificial Intelligence, arises all various formats of AI associated tools. Now we have the AI-driven conversation technology, LaMDA, which researchers will deliberate to assume that we may be approaching sentience pretty soon.
While it could appear that human-like AI responses may indicate sentience, it is important to realize the nature of language-based programs, LaMDA, is not near a level consciousness yet, although it speaks like a person does (as it is programmed that way).
There would have scientists and researchers talk that sentient AI might not be possible because we just don’t have the infrastructure to create it yet, and we don’t have the right understanding of what consciousness really is.
In order for an AI to truly sentient, it would need to be able to think, perceive and feel, rather than simply use language in a highly natural way. However, scientists are divided on the question of whether it is even feasible for an AI system to be able to achieve these characteristics.
Companies that are creating AI like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and many others do not currently have the goal to create sentient AI. They are more focused on the areas of artificial general intelligence (AGI), where a machine would solve a range of complex problems, and learn from it .
Nevertheless, the sentient AI will have to be the goal the future.

Artificial intelligence is the science of making machine do things that would require intelligence if done by men.

AI is great in giving answers from a lot of data. Provided they can access it.
Eg. Customer service with always the same questions and routine
The human brain is too comples and still a big unknown when it comes to discernment, evaluation, moderation.
As such too manicheistic for now ( yes or no), which is excluding and dictatorial in many ways.
We see the devastation of such algorithms in many so called scientific models. Lot of BS imho.
Hi Maria. So can AI have conciseness? Yes, I believe it can and will before we know it. This will be bought up in our upcoming boxing match. I will draft this up soon but I have so much to do ATM (tax returns due at end of the month).
Don't worry though - the Rumble in the WA Jungle will be coming soon. I promise ;-)
Have a great day.
Paul
Great AI post Maria. Now I know why you commented on my blog about Google LaMDA Chatbot, "You beat me into posting this!" LOL
When it comes to sentient AI, LaMDA is not the only AI driven language and conversational models built by Google.
Perhaps that will be another blog for another time. Right now LaMDA is stealing the spotlight, which I know Google would prefer to happen.
yes. fully sentient AI is in our future. It might not happen till the extremely distant future, but it is coming. that is unless we were to stop all endeavors in that direction right now. I just don't see that happening.
I pray our toys don't turn on us.

For the most part, I agree with you, Maria. However, if AI becomes truly sentient, then what is to prevent it from rewriting/overriding its code? :S
True. But one day we will. And unless we make sure that that infrastructure establishes the Absolute Supremacy of the Human race (not intended in a dictator/supremacist way-despite the way I said it) in a way that makes it impossible for machines to rise against us. It is something to bear in mind.

Hi Maria,
I had never heard the word sentient before and decided to check it out. Here is one definition I found:
“The adjective sentient is used in several different contexts, but usually to describe nonhuman beings. When nonhuman entities can feel, think, learn from, and respond to their external and internal environments, they are considered sentient.”
After reading this, your post and conclusion resonated with me perfectly. This is a very apt definition for what companies developing AI are pursuing.
Cheers.
