What Survives the Wreckage

What Survives the Wreckage

The 2026 numbers are in, and they're worth a second read.

For a decade, the formula was simple: start a blog, rank on Google, monetize the clicks. The income reports were the proof. Then someone actually checked on the proof.

Daniel Stanica — a Romanian SEO and monetization consultant who runs MonetizeBetter — tracked 100 blogs from 2022 to 2026. These were the celebrated winners, the income-report blogs everyone screenshotted. The median lost 85% of its organic search traffic.

His own site was one of the 100 blogs in the study. He got hit like everyone else, so he's writing from inside the wreckage, not above it.

But 21 of them grew. That's the part to study.

Losing Blog Niches

The Losers

The failures first, because they're instructive. We can learn from these mistakes.

Not one make-money-blogging site in the group grew. Median down 93%. Finance did worse at 99%. Health and wellness down 93%. Fashion 90%.

The common thread is summarizable content. "Best budgeting apps" is now a three-sentence AI answer. AI Overviews answer roughly half of all searches, and when one appears, clicks to the top result fall by about 58%.

Was it just AI answers?

No. There were two waves, and AI was only the second.

The first was Google itself. The Helpful Content Update in September 2023 and the March 2024 core update — Google said the pair cut low-quality, unoriginal content in search by about 45%. Independent publishers got flattened before AI Overviews even mattered. HouseFresh, an air-purifier review site, lost 91% of its Google traffic in that first wave alone.

Then AI Overviews went from experiment to default. By early 2026, they appear on roughly half of searches, and Ahrefs measured them cutting clicks to the top result by about 58%.

Both waves punished the same thing: summarizable content. A "best budgeting apps" post is exactly what an AI Overview hands the user in three sentences without a click. If your content can be summarized, it will be, and you won't get the traffic.

And getting big didn't save anyone. The median decline sat around 85% across every size band, from small sites to 500k+ visitor properties. Scale bought nothing.

So no — it wasn't just AI answers. It was a business model dying twice: first Google stopped rewarding unoriginal content, then AI stopped sending the clicks. The blogs that died were the ones with nothing left once the traffic arbitrage ended.

Not one make-money-blogging site in the group grew. Median down 93%. Finance did worse at 99%. Health and wellness down 93%. Fashion 90%.

All figures are from the study or Google/Ahrefs as cited — nothing stretched.

The Winning Blogging Formula

The Winners

Parenting blogs grew 108% at the median. DIY held flat while everything else fell. Every survivor shared at least two of four traits:

  • Firsthand experience a machine can't fake,
  • Content that's hard to summarize,
  • An audience they owned,
  • A real product.

Read that list again. That's not a traffic trick. That's a business. Real experience, real audience, real product.

What the 21 did differently

I know, I am repeating myself. But I want this to sink in. Twenty-one blogs grew while everything around them fell. They weren't lucky. They shared the same traits, and the study names them: firsthand experience a machine can't fake, content that's hard to summarize, an audience they owned, and a real product. Every survivor had at least two. The ones that thrived had three or four.

Look at who they were. Parenting blogs grew 108% at the median — 7 of 10 grew. Why? A parent documenting life week by week can't be compressed into a three-sentence AI answer. The value is the lived experience, not the information.

DIY held roughly flat while everything else fell, and that undersells it. Four of the six DIY sites grew. A crochet site, Crochet365Knittoo, quadrupled — because a pattern tested stitch by stitch is the purest "content is the doing" there is.

Food is the cleanest proof. A recipe is something you actually cooked: the photos, the timing, the "this looks too thin, keep going." Kitchen Sanctuary grew from 950,000 to 2.4 million organic visits and turned it into two cookbooks. Pinch of Yum went from 1.3 to 2.2 million.

And the best story in the whole dataset: HouseFresh. The air-purifier review site that lost 91% of its Google traffic after the Helpful Content Update was the poster child for everything wrong with the algorithm. In October 2025, they announced traffic hadn't just recovered; it had passed its pre-update peak. No technical silver bullet. They doubled down on hands-on product testing, built a YouTube channel, collaborated with Linus Tech Tips, and went on podcasts. Built the brand off Google.

The study's line on all of it: there was no safe niche.
There was only safe content.

The niches that died described things instead of doing them. This wasn't a survey of random blogs. These were the winners, which makes the numbers worse for the old playbook — and better for anyone building the right way. And Stanica isn't writing from the cheap seats: his own site was one of the 100. He took the hit too.

The dividing line was never the niche. It was the content. Build on what you've actually done, own your audience, and sell something real. That's the game we're playing here.

So Why Start At All?

Because the wreckage cleared the field.

The 21 that grew prove the new rules, and they're simpler than the old ones: know something real, write what a machine can't summarize, own your audience, sell something real.

Everyone who lost was playing the 2022 game — rank on Google, monetize clicks, repeat. That game is over for them and for you alike, which means you're not behind. You're starting clean. No 500-post content farm to unwind, no bad habits to unlearn.

The incumbents lost their moat. A newcomer with genuine experience has never started on more equal footing.

Don't start a blog to chase search traffic. Start one to build the audience and the product that 21 blogs just proved still works.
