Dear friends,

while updating all my websites, I noticed that one of them actually got hacked!
My latest post got edited.
It is luckily a site that is not yet really developed and doesn't really get traffic.

Of course I updated my site and sent the modified post into draft status.
I contacted support and will see what they can do about it.
Maybe they still have a backup of this post.
Additionally, I hope they are able to check my site if there are any other traces from the hacker.

As other members have warned already.
Get the latest WordPress update ASAP.
The danger is real and they can hurt you and your site a lot.

Once I get an answer of the support, I will update this blog.

Take care,

Moritz

UPDATE:

The problem has been solved.
Support restored an older version of the post, but it was not the latest and polished one.
That gave me the idea to check my "revisions" and I found my original post there.

If that ever happens to you, you can restore your post the same way.
There is a screenshot below in the comments.

Additionally, I will create backups of my sites more frequently now.

Thanks for the heads up

You're welcome.

Good tip to look at the revisions! Thanks!
Btw, my sites are all updated:)

Shows how important those updates are. ;)

Yes, they are, I always update right away

I just read your post and decided to check the sites I'm not recently working on and guess what I was hacked as well!!!

Luckily as I said it's a site I only have one post on and I was able to restore it from my revisions.
I've sent a ticket to site support to check this out.
Thanks for the warning :)

I only just realized that another site got hacked as well.
That was another small and unimportant site. A test site I use to help people fix theme-related problems.

It doesn't even have its own domain.
Kind of weird that the guy who hacked my sites (it seems it was the same guy), targeted my unimportant sites.
My main site was up to date, of course, so he wouldn't have been able to hack it that easily.

Glad you noticed that one of your sites got hacked, too.

Moritz

Thanks for that information! And glad you sorted it out...

You're welcome. :)

So sorry this happened to you, so unfair! Thanks for the headsup. I have the update, so should I feel safe?

Lynne

Hi.
For now yes.
Hackers usually find their ways but won't bother with smaller sites if it gets too difficult.

The site they hacked in my case was a really small site, but since it was rather easy at that time, one guy decided to hack it "just for fun".

Cheers
Moritz

Thanks, but how did you find out that he hacked it, "just for fun"?

Cheers, Lynne

That's what he wrote in the post. :D

He could have done much more harm. So I assume(!) it was really just for fun.

Additionally, there wouldn't have been anything to gain for him.
Both sites that got hacked (I just noticed that another site got hacked before I updated it) are very small and unimportant.

Moritz

I updated my post with the latest info.

Cheers

I had the same thing happen! My latest blog post was edited and replaced with a graphic and some very vulgar text. Unfortunately, it was on my best site.

You may be able to recover the post though! Go to edit your post. Over on the left where you would Publish it....click on Revisions and you should be able to revert the post back to before it was hacked.

I was "lucky" because nothing vulgar was posted on my site. ;)

And I just did what you suggested.
The support was able to restore my post, but it was not the latest version.
That gave me the idea with the revisions and now I have my original post online again.

All the best and thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks for sharing this. I figured that my brand new, undeveloped sites would be safe. I have not taken the time to update them yet but I will now.

Yeah, they must have found my site on a social media site, since I am not getting organic traffic yet for this site.
Getting the latest update is still a thing everybody should do ASAP. :)

Mine are all updated now. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

Thank you for the warnings, hope yours gets resolved quickly and easily:)

It did get resolved.
Updating my blog.

Cheers
Moritz

Thanks for the warning MoritzS. The threats are never ending, but I am sure Kyle and Carson and their support team are doing their best to keep our sites secure.

Absolutely.
The latest WordPress update apparently fixed that security issue.
