What Do You Do When You Cannot Wite?

First of all, let me start this post off by saying that unless your fingers are broken, or you have severe carpal tunnel, there is NEVER a time that you can't write. Actually even those scenarios are not a good excuse for not writing as you could use the opportunity to learn how to use speech to text software.

So, now that I've drawn you in here with my slightly incorrect title, let me rephrase the question: "What do you do when you feel as if you cannot write". It's a similar question, but adding the feeling part actually gives it a much different slant.

As a freelance writer, I can assure you that there are many days I feel this way. And do you know how I overcome the feeling of being unable (or unwilling) to write? I sit my ass down in front of the keyboard and start writing!

I've found that writing is very similar to exercise in as much as both activities sometimes seem like the last thing on Earth we want to do, but once you begin you find that you actually get drawn in.

I have had some of my most productive writing sessions after feeling as if I simply had nothing to say and couldn't possibly string together a useful sentence...let alone a paragraph or an entire article.

There is something about the act of writing that puts my mind in a different state. Once I begin I find that ideas and words begin to pour into my mind. Sometimes it's not possible to type as fast as the ideas come.

Other times I continue to struggle. It's these times that are most valuable I think. They teach discipline. They also teach me that even when I don't feel like writing I can still do it. My productivity may suffer (though not as much as you might imagine), but my writing is just as solid as the times when I come to the keyboard stoked and ready to rival Ernest Hemingway.

So, even though you might not like this answer, take it from someone who regularly writes 5-6000 words a day. Even if you don't feel like writing, do it anyway because it is a requirement of your business. Or close up shop and choose a business that doesn't require writing. Because for most of us in an online business, writing is a necessity that will remain for a very long time.

Good blog, and like the other good ones it comes down to a message of hard work.

5-6k words per day?! Wow I am not sure I could type that many let alone have it make sense in articles :)

Thanks Josh. Somehow 5-6k per day usually isn't too difficult for me. In fact, I am typically done by 2pm, so if I continued writing through the evening I could likely hit 10k a day. I find that if you're writing on subjects that you have a good deal of knowledge about already the writing goes much faster.

Hey Steve, great blog, it sure touches my situation, I will have to do as you say. Thanks!

Writing can be a love/hate relationship, but at the end of the day you just have to keep plugging away if you want to see success.

i couldnt agree more with you.

Thanks :)
