The Best Actually Useful Phone Accessories.

It seems like pretty much everyone makes a smartphone accessory of some kind. Most of them are terrible and don’t work. But some of them are actually awesome. Let’s cut through the junk and make a list of the best.

2015 was a big year for cell phones. The iPhone 6S changed pictures. The Galaxy S6 Edge changed cell phone design. Several small brands such as Alcatel, BLU and Huawei made us rethink whether we really needed to spend massive amounts of money on a big name brand cell phone.

The previous year also brought plenty of innovations in cell phone accessories. We predict that those accessories will continue to get better, cheaper and more widely available in 2016. Here are five hot new cell phone accessories that will really take off in 2016.

Depending on who your favorite smartphone manufacturer is, 2016 was either a great year or a terrible year for new cell phones. There was the disastrous premier of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which had to be recalled because the battery was catching on fire. Then there was the seamless release of the Apple iPhone 7, which has some cool new features (our favorite is the ability to draw personalized text messages for people), and the updates to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which continues to sell extremely well.

What does next year hold for cell phone lovers? Here are seven new cell phones to watch for in 2017.

Samsung Galaxy S8

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is expected to hit store shelves and mailboxes as early as February 2017. It’s likely the smartphones will have some pretty amazing and futuristic features. Perhaps the most impressive is the ability to fold in half. We’re not talking about a flip phone; this will be your standard full-sized and flat-screened smartphone, except you can bend it in half for easier storage. Pretty impressive.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is also rumored to have a fingerprint scanner on the back, a bezel-less design (which will make all of the line’s cell phones more like the Galaxy Edge) and a thinner profile. It stands to reason the phone will also have a faster processor, improved screen resolution and a better camera.

pple iPhone 8

Apple is expected to release a new version of the iPhone in late 2017. Those in the business of making predictions share that the device is likely to have a large edge-to-edge screen and no home button. Wireless charging is a possibility, and there’s some talk that the phone may be able to power up when it’s as far as 15 feet away from the charging station. And again, the iPhone 8 is likely to be faster, smarter and have better cameras than any iPhone that’s come before it.

It’s possible the iPhone 8’s entire body will be made of super-strong and shatter-resistant glass. There’s also talk of a retinal scanner, facial recognition or other anti-theft technology.

LG G6

The next big thing from LG will be the LG G6, the continuation of the brand’s popular line. It will be out as early as February 2017.

Interestingly, the LG G6 may have many of the features rumored to be included on the iPhone 8. The device may have a glass back as well as a glass screen, and a retinal scanner for improved security. There’s also talk of wireless charging, a higher screen resolution (so the phone can be used with virtual reality devices), faster processing speeds and better cameras.

Microsoft Surface Phone

The Microsoft Surface is a very popular tablet, and the company has talked for years about shrinking the technology down to phone size. There’s speculation that 2017 will be the year the Surface cell phone finally comes on the market.

Microsoft hasn’t confirmed that a Surface smartphone even exists, so no one really knows what features it will have. However, it seems likely that the phone will be powerful, have extremely high resolution, and be compatible with Microsoft’s business software. Experts say it will be a good choice for businesspeople who need to be able to access documents, spreadsheets, presentations and other resources on the go. Some people believe the phone will come with a pen similar to the one available with the Surface (or phablet phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note).

HTC 11

HTC’s newest offering is expected to be an impressive and powerful phone with many outstanding new features. Among them: a faster processor, higher screen resolution, more space for storing photos and videos, water resistance and an improved handset design. Fans of HTC phones will likely be able to pick up the 11 model by March 2017.

Motorola Moto Z

Premiering at some point during Q1 or Q2 of 2017 is the Motorola Moto Z, the next phone in what is now Motorola’s flagship line. The phone is expected to have a much faster processor than the last one, as well as a stylish metal back and a better camera.

The big news is that the Moto Z is likely to be equipped with the Google Tango Moto Mod, an update that will make it well-suited for augmented reality games (Pokémon Go, anyone?), virtual reality and navigation apps.

Fans of the Moto X will be relieved to know that Motorola may not be abandoning this mid-range line of smartphones. It’s possible that a new version of the Moto X will be available in 2017.

BlackBerry DTEK50 (Mercury)

Are you still addicted to your BlackBerry? The company released two new smartphones in 2016 and has a third planned for 2017. Design specifications for the BlackBerry DTEK50 (which is also known as the BlackBerry Mercury) are still under wraps, so there are few details about the device’s features. The company has confirmed that it will have the full QWERTY keyboard the BlackBerry is famous for. To keep the price low, it’s not expected to be much more powerful or speedy than previous models. But for people who can’t quite give up on the “crackberry,” it should seem just right.
