Growing up
- GROWING UP
- I grew up on a small island called Dominica, where everyone blows their horns or waves their hands when they a passing by. Daily greetings good morning and good evening was a proper manners. (Skylark) is a proper noun and (coonumunoo) is definitely an adjective. We played outside, we got dirty, Played in rain, ate fruits from trees without even washing it out before eating it. Go to the rivers was certainly a big thing, I went to the rivers so I can swim around in the water and also catch crayfish and bate (small prawns) to boil a little broth to eat. We were not afraid of anything but loose dogs, jumpy and soocooyah! And of course snakes. Likfe as a little girl growing up was fun.
- Trust me the sunset was my curfew and when the street lights come on , you better be home already if not then your little bottom will find some to cry about because we would be punish. Don’t even talk about going in the house you got to make sure that your hands and foot are wash before entering the house. Let’s talk about what we use eat our chicken was fried , stewed, or curried up for good eating. Ginger beer sorrel, lime and orange juice was what we drink and don’t even talk about a JU-C and fanta were soda of choice, or the worse case scenario was sugar water to wet the throat.
- School was mandatory even if you didn’t want to go, or it was your time to go to school. Wow birth certificate was just an easy fix. Don’t even talk about the shopping carts were (baskets) and tennis shoes/sneakers are gym boots. By the way don’t even mention it if you pass by and an elder is there and don’t greet the person it is consider disrespectful whether or not the person is your parents or not we were thought to respect everybody, or else you will get an ass cut with licks with what ever that is close by but we were disciplined, I wasn’t abuse, my parents did teach me well and I must say thanks to them.
- I am so happy to be from a small island called beautiful Dominica and I will never forget where I came from! And might I add we had a village! Where your friends mama was your mama and when your parents are not there everyone one was your tanty and uncle.
- Dominica is the nature Isle
