I don't know how often people involved in say, online marketing, encounter skepticism, that is, skepticism among their friends about their personal ambitions, rather than skepticism about IM in general, so it depends on who the skeptics are.
If the skeptic is somebody who otherwise believes in your potential, that's motivation to succeed, as long as their skepticism is presented in a well-meaning, non-corrosive manner.
If the skeptic is somebody less well disposed toward you, then that's a different kind of motivation, either to prove them wrong or disregard them completely.
