Network Marketing vs Internet Marketing
I've been here on WA about a week or so and as I'm reading all of the training and watching all of the videos, it occurred to me that Internet Marketing is very much like Network Marketing. ( MLM )
I started my career with a Computer Science BS degree from Purdue University. I spent 23 years as a software engineer in the IT field. In 2001, my wife and I started a home business via Network Marketing. Over the next 6 years, learning and working hard, we built that business into a full time income. In 2007, I quit my software engineering career and began a full time career in network marketing, which I still enjoy very much.
I've always been big on having multiple streams of income, and working from home is awesome, so, I started looking at some additional income streams. After chasing a couple of guru IM programs, spending $100 or so, I was fortunate enough to land here at WA.
Oddly enough, it's like 2001 all over again for me. Back then, starting out in network marketing, we had no experience with a home business, the products, or network marketing. So, I read, learned, and asked tons of questions. Today, I find myself doing the exact same thing. Here at WA, I've been consuming everything I can get my hands / eyes on. And, I have tons of questions! And yes, it's a little overwhelming, just like those first months in Network Marketing.
Here is what I know. It's easy to get rich slowly and very difficult to get rich quick. I don't expect this business endeavor to earn us a ton of money quickly, but, I do expect that given time, an education, and hard work, that we'll see results. How soon? Don't know. And, like network marketing, the power in this business is the residual income component - and that's not easy to find in the business world. A dollar in residual income is worth $2 in 'regular / hourly' income!
My first goal, cover my monthly expenses with income from a website. Second goal, $100 a month in profits. To me, that's a proof of concept and from that point forward, it's just a matter of time before we scale the income to higher numbers.
Questions in my mind:
Does this really work? I think the impression that I'm getting, after my first week, is that it's fairly easy to be successful, but in my heart I know, just like with network marketing, it's not easy to earn big bucks.
I'm looking for a mentor, someone who has been here a while and is earning some real money - >$500 per month. I wish one could tell who met that criteria when reading WA blog posts, tutorials, and classroom discussions. It would be a lot easier to sort out the truth from the otherwise well intended, but incorrect, information. I'd rather know that what I'm reading or hearing is coming from someone who is truly knowledgeable (earning real money) than to hear from someone who thinks they know what they're talking about, but in reality, hasn't yet made a dime. No disrespect intended, but it's not easy to discern the good training from the questionable suggestions. And, again, this is no different that with Network Marketing.
Well, time to get back at it. I'm looking forward to the months to come.

G'day, Mike! You at least have realistic expectations and previous marketing experience which will stand you in good stead. So far, through my own inexperience in this arena, I've put up a couple of sites - still to be fully developed and monetized ($0.00 as yet) - and had a lot of positive help from supportive friends. Education and hard work - none of us will get very far without it! :) george
