How I fixed my biggest mistake at WA Training - Changing permalinks

Hi guys,

In my last blog, My Biggest Mistake at WA Training, I made the mistake of changing the permalinks of my page/post after I published them and as a result, my traffic went downhill while my bounce rate went up. After investigating, I found out that I had many broken links because of the changes I made in 2 of my page permalinks.

If you want to change your permalinks, make sure that you do it before you publish your post/page but if you want to change it after you must do it the right way by using a redirection before you change or edit it.

See this training: https://managewp.com/wordpress-permalinks-guide

However, if you had already changed your permalinks before you use a redirection tool, follow the steps below:

1. Check all the links of your website to see which ones are broken.

2. Change the links with the old permalinks and replace it with the new permalinks

3. You also need to fix your 404 errors from your Google Webmaster Tools, there is another training on how to do that, if you do not yet know how to do it, let me know so I can put the training here.

Cheers,

Maria

You know, it's funny you post this because I am going through this exact same thing right now. I would change the permalinks after I posted them because I wanted them to look nice. Then after I installed a sitemap on Google Webmaster tools, I noticed there were few broken links on my site a result. An ambassador has been helping me fix the issue, but this is a good lesson learned here. Choose a good keyword you're happy with, stick with that keyword, and just leave the permalink alone after you publish the post. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's been through this, thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you for sharing your same experience as well. I bet that there are more people who made this mistake too. It was a lot of work to fix this stuff up, I had to check every page and post to see and fix the broken links, it was time-consuming and not fun at all. I will absolutely leave the permalinks alone from now on. :)
Cheers,
Maria
