Introduction

How to beat procrastination

We’ve all experienced it — that moment where you sit and stare at a task, knowing it needs to get done, yet somehow finding every excuse to delay it. Time passes, stress builds, and the task still sits there, untouched.

The usual advice? “Just start” or “set better goals.” Sound familiar?

But let’s be honest — if those worked, you wouldn’t be here reading this.

In this post, I’m sharing five refreshingly practical ways to tackle procrastination — techniques you likely haven’t come across in the typical productivity articles. These are different, and more importantly, they work.

Let’s jump in.

Strategy #1: Break It Down Intelligently

Yes, you’ve probably been told to divide big projects into smaller steps. But here’s the part most people miss: it’s not just about making a list — it’s about how you structure those small steps.

The trick is to pick the absolute easiest, least intimidating task to start with. Something so simple it feels like cheating — like opening a document, jotting down a title, or writing a single sentence.

This little win sets a positive chain reaction in motion. As soon as you accomplish one tiny step, your brain gets a dopamine hit and naturally leans into the next one. That’s how momentum is built.

Start small. Think big.

Strategy #2: Upgrade the 2-Minute Rule

You might be familiar with the “if it takes less than two minutes, just do it” rule. It’s great advice for small tasks, but let’s take it further.

Use it to overcome resistance to any task, big or small. Set a timer for just two minutes and commit to doing absolutely nothing but that task during that time — no phone, no tabs, no distractions.

Most of the time, you’ll find yourself wanting to continue once those two minutes are up. That initial hurdle is often the hardest part, and this simple shift makes it far easier to get over.

Strategy #3: Give Yourself Tight, Self-Imposed Deadlines

One of the biggest reasons we procrastinate is that the due date feels distant and non-threatening. And human nature being what it is — we’ll delay until it feels urgent.

The solution? Create your own deadlines — and make them tighter than you think is comfortable.

If you believe you need three days, give yourself one and a half. That little bit of healthy pressure will kick your productivity into high gear and help you get far more done, far faster.

It’s not about stressing yourself out — it’s about creating controlled urgency.

Strategy #4: Make Distractions a Hassle

Everyone says “eliminate distractions,” but what really works is making it inconvenient to get distracted.

Yes, switch off notifications. But go further: move your phone out of reach. Close browsers and just keep the ones open that you need to work on.

The more effort it takes to indulge your distractions, the less likely you are to do it.

You don’t need a perfect distraction-free environment — you just need to make those temptations annoying enough to ignore.

Strategy #5: Celebrate Small Wins (Consistently)

A common mistake people make is waiting until a big task is completely finished before rewarding themselves. The problem? By then, your motivation might be long gone.

Instead, reward yourself for each mini milestone you reach. Cross off a few items on your list? Take a short break. Finish the intro to your presentation? Grab your favorite snack or stretch your legs.

The idea is to create a cycle where your brain starts associating small amounts of progress with positive reinforcement. That feeling of accomplishment becomes addictive, keeping your motivation alive through to the finish line.

Wrapping It Up

Procrastination isn’t a personality flaw — it’s often a learned habit built on overwhelm, avoidance, and poor systems. The good news? Habits can be changed.

By breaking tasks into manageable actions, creating urgency, and making distractions inconvenient, you’ll start shifting from avoidance to action mode.

These five techniques aren’t the usual advice you see everywhere — and that’s why they work. Give them a try and watch how quickly you start moving through that to-do list.

Hey Meyer, these are great tips and it is one of my biggest problems. However, I can't close my browser as it is where I do the majority of my work. I have too many tabs open and that can't be decreased as I have to action all the tabs at some point. Some require a later decision such as time, opportunity, or money investment.

What do you suggest I do to solve my problem of having too many tabs on my Chrome browser and too many emails in my two main inboxes? Note, I can't just unsubscribe as most of them are necessary valuable info for business purposes.

1

I would suggest just having the tabs that you need for what you are working on at that time, otherwise they all stack up. I don't think it makes us more productive having 30 tabs open. :) (Sometimes we have multiple tabs of the same application open.)

These are great tips because procrastinating seriously hurts our income potential whether online or off. Thanks for sharing!

It's a pleasure, Mel.

My big failure is in time-management. I keep worrying I don't have enough time to finish a project until I wasted more than enough time to do the project if I had just broken it into pieces that fit my schedule. I am working to retrain my brain to accept unfinished business as long as I make progress every day.

2

Thanks for this encouragement. I will make half a day today a 'catch up day'. I have several administrative tasks that need to be done and I hate them all - chasing a refund for wrong items sent that I've sent back, filling out a claim for pet insurance and taking it back to the vet, calling the bank...

I think I will need to use all your steps 😀

P.S. I will report back - that will make me accountable and be the 6th step.

3

That sounds great!

Yes, use the strategies discussed in the post and let me know how you get on. :)

1

Sounds like we both could use an accountability partner. At least we see our weak spots and see them as room to improve and not a solid NO.

2

Yes, Andy, I just mentioned on Sonia's blog that I might actually start writing a monthly blog update - it would make me accountable - so that I get the techie things and SEO things done as well, which I don't enjoy.

Writing things down in public and revisiting it at the end of the month would probably be very motivating.

Those little task I equate to scrubbing the toilets, if you aren't willing to do that you are a manager not a leader you find leaks and put Band-Aids on them not repair the leak.

2

Certain things are so easy, simple, and productive ! Following the 2-minute rule should not be difficult for anyone, if they give it a try. And the upgradation may happen effortlessly.

1

Yes, applying the 2-minute rule to ANY task and not just easy tasks will get the ball rolling. :)
