Hi everyone,

I know some time ago, I said I wouldn't talk about my health issues, but I will make an exception today. :-)

In Sept 2023, I started having issues with my right shoulder and then in the months ahead fell 4 times landing on that shoulder and arm which have only aggravated the situation.

I still do not have full motion with my arm and shoulder and that became crystal clear today when Melissa Jeane and I were at the Mall and I picked up a dumb bell and used it with my left arm and did 4 - 4 count reps. I don't know what the weight of it was, but it was bigger than normal.

I then went to use my right arm and I could not even lift it up all the way. I was disappointed to say the least.

I also have some issues with my legs/hips and despite being 68 years old, I am not going to write it off as old age although that may contribute some.

So what is clear to me is that I need to revamp my entire schedule.

I'm actually not one for schedules. I wake up and think about what I want to do for the day and then I just work on those. But I can see I really do need to change that and be better organized and more efficient.

I will set up an exercise routine first for each day including lots of stretching.

I need to set up a daily schedule now for homeschooling Melissa Jeane.

Then I can work in my business.

I do need to start fine tuning my business and stop doing things that only take up time and are not efficient. And of course, every now and again its good to look at things and re-evaluate.

Its obvious to me that my health needs to be a top priority now. No more excuses. No more delays.

I want to be physically productive for many more years.

That also includes eating only the best most nutritional, real foods and eliminating sugar completely as well as processed foods.

So it was a good wake up call for me. As long as I am above ground, I can be doing something to improve myself.

Glad to see you taking initiative in your health and wellness, Mel.

Since you work so much off your laptop, have you ever thought about investing in one of those standing workstations? Of course, you can always just stack some boxes on top of each other to use too.

You don't have to stand the entire time on your laptop, but it's a small change - especially for those of us who work remotely and aren't quite active as we use to be.

Every little bit helps.

Isaiah 🙂

You're right Isaiah. I've done that before and I probably should do that again. Every bit helps. :-)

Good morning Mel,

I'm sorry that you have damaged your shoulder, I do hope that it quickly improves.

I do believe that health is very important and it's very easy when we are busy to just be sitting at a desk and not get exercise. I'm fortunate in a way as I have an offline business, which means I have to use some physical effort.

I've often thought that if I worked full-time online, I would probably have to go to the gym, which is something that I have never had to do. I'm sure that there are plenty of exercises that you could potentially do from home; however, going for a brisk walk every day is a very good thing.

Have a great day.

Roy

They also recommend standing for 5 minutes every half hour or I might do what I did some years ago and just stand instead of sitting while online, Roy.

Mel

That doesn't sound like a bad idea, Mel, it's something I've never really thought about standing. Yesterday, I was in front of the screen for probably around 13 hours, which is a lot for me! There comes a point when you just have to get away. Sometimes, I will just take the dog out in the middle of the day for a walk across the fields, which is quite therapeutic.

I hope that your shoulder is improving.

Have a great day.

Roy

Thanks Roy! Yes, sitting for a long time is not good for our health especially the older we get.

Mel

I hear you, Mel! It's good to move around.

Have a great day.

Roy

Thanks Roy! You, too.

Mel, you have made a good start recognizing your condition. I became aware of fitness when I was 14 and have tried a lot of things. I was a fitness trainer for a period of time. Taking care of yourself first is important. I found many people want to start fast and tend do over do. Work out a plan and begin slowly even if you feel like doing more. Walking is a great exercise if you are able to walk. Again, start slow and then increase your distance or the time you walk. Dealing with diet change is a challenge, your body will react against you for awhile no matter how bad your eating might have been. Earlier in my life I found myself addicted to cola drinks. It took me about a month to get over the effects of quitting. I made no other diet changes and lost 10 pounds in about 6 months. We went on a gluten free diet because of my wife 11 years ago and we took all foods with gluten out of the house as well as sweeteners. We learned to use smaller amounts of the natural sweeteners. Once we got used to the lower sweeteners we lost the taste for things that are sweet. A lot of gluten free products in the stores use a lot of sweeteners. My wife went on line and found recipes and then adapted them to reduces the sweeteners. I only mention all of this to encourage you to stay with it, you will feel better and it will be easier to do a lot of things. BTW, My wife and I are 80.

Thank you Rick for taking the time to share your story. Much appreciated!

Mel

You are welcome.

And like anything else you do Mel, you have to love it and make it fun. I put on my favorite music while working out and enjoy every minute.

Plus it has to be a lifestyle change.
I also eliminated all red meat from my diet, and its unbelievable how great I feel.
I have never been a soda person, 90 percent water and 10 percent tea for me.
My "old" 65 year ole butt can go 60 minutes on the treadmill on level 15 and don't even get tired. ..

Anyway, good luck and I know you got this..

Larry

That sounds great Larry. Well done!

Mel

Mel,
All the best with your health, would love to know how you get on with eliminating sugar - I think we all need to.
Thanks again
Peter

Thanks Peter! It will be a challenge.
