Unforgetable True Story

True story, years ago, I was working with a colleague who had a patient complaining of headache in the middle of the night. There was no order for a pain medication. So she had to call the oncall doctor to ask for an order for Tylenol in the middle of the night.

The doctor sounded upset to be awakened and gave order to my colleague to go to the wall and bang her head 3x. Of course she had to stick out for herself. After he gave the order for Tylenol, he said before hanging up, "Oh, and don't forget to go to the wall and bang your head 3x."

I thought that was hilarious.

That used to be the case, we have to call for every single thing. Now we have protocols. Protocols and algorithms were developed to address possible concerns were one worker can function independently, efficiently, effectively and promptly within her or his scope of practice.

I think this is what we need to succeed in this business, push myself to work independently with the guidance of our mentors and the community, efficiently, effectively and fast.

Oh dear, what a way to tell your patient, wonder why he wanted to be a doctor in the first place.

Very good analogy.

I hope that doctor took his own advice when he had a headache! Protocols and procedures are very helpful so that we can move forward with clarity and effectiveness. Best of luck.
