What do comments say about your site?
Does lack of comments mean that your content is not interesting enough, or does it say that your audience is the type that is not interested enough to engage with your content any further? Does it mean that you have answered all questions pertaining to the subject or does it mean that your content lacks depth? In my opinion, based on the way that I consume information, I would say that more controversial topics spur more comments albeit nothing deep, but still they engage readers on a level that an academic paper cannot.
My conclusion from all this is to accept that there are people who would not comment because it's just not what they do. Sometimes one has to put forward a question to the audience in order to spur commenting, and emotionally charged questions seem to illicit a stronger response than the bland ones that no one really cares about. The problem with emotional responses though is that they are not always positive or helpful.
Comments keep sites alive and interesting (for better or worse), and they present an opportunity to add content that you would not have thought of on your own. Comments and questions gets us inside the mind of our guests so that we know what is important to them. Comments can also provide more content ideas. With comments we have an opportunity to explain things further to our readers but also an opportunity to help our readers further by writing about something that is important to them.
