It's like bobbing for apples
Over the last 2 weeks I have been fascinated by the number housed within the 'Rank' box on my profile ... fascinated because of the range of fluctuations.
In 2 weeks my ranking has gone from over 3500 to the high 900's. I am so excited, you know the sort of excitement that comes from a sense of achievement when, as a teenager, you suddenly find yourself becoming more popular.
And then it stalled ... bouncing between 1008 and 980, like a bouncing ball.
In the moment when I realised that I was focused on making the ball stay below 900 I also realised that my focus had sifted to be more about how to improve my ranking rather than increasing my income by the improving the conversions on my websites.
I am smiling because only the other day I was watching a documentary about the same effect gaining likes in Facebook has on teenagers. Another way of describing it could be ... well imagine watching those YouTube clips of cats. You know the ones where the cats chase the reflection on the wall and eventually don't catch the moving mark.
So today I put away my desire to chase the shiny objects and instead focus on why I am here - to create a profitable online business.
There have been benefits of chasing the dot. I have made friends, found mentors and learned so much by engaging and interacting with the many amazing people here in WA. I am grateful to be continuing the journey we are all on building my business and sharing some wonderful stories interacting with this amazing community.
Have a brilliant day :-)
Stay true to your path.
Matu

That's about where I am now. I was focusing on the wrong things but at the same time, interacting here also helps me to learn
That is how I learn too, from what other people experience. I read the other day that truth can only be experienced not learned and I think this is true.
I look at that Rank # like looking at your Blood Pressure, the more you worry about it the higher it gets.
We need to focus on our lessons, and our websites. Ask for help, offer help when you can, in the normal course of doing your business. Let the rankings fall where they may.
Great post, Matu! That ranking, as I keep telling people, is ONLY based on social engagement, i.e. helping others and encouraging. I haven't even been here 3 months yet and I don't do anything differently today as I did on my first day. I just have a big mouth, type fast and jump in on everything. LOL I try not to look, I really do. I know it will fall over time. The main thing is working on our sites and really learning this thing called affiliate marketing! You are doing quite well, my friend!
Excellent post. I, too, have been pursuing a higher member ranking, but it's honestly not so much about the popularity for me - it's more of a burning desire to to give back.
Some of you can maybe relate to how isolating a career in IM can be. For those of us who are into it, it's a passion, but when we try to discuss it with our significant others, friends or family, they're all staring at us like a deer in the headlights. I feel so energized being here and being surrounded by folks with a desire to succeed in IM - I just can't help but want to share and reach out to others.
But you're absolutely correct in that you don't want that perceived status to take your eye off the ball...and the reason we're all here to begin with . . . to become successful affiliates!
Better get back to working on my site now!
Cheers!

I like reading blogs because I learn a lot and still trying to absorb as much as possible as well as help when I can. Don't chase the shiny object ever in life, stay focused on your goal.
Thanks Debbi, will do :-)
