I've personally used mantra theme for a similar case. It has a lot of possibilities to optimize it to your needs. If you have to show a lot of product images, use the nextgen gallery plugin, gives a lot of possibilities to make nice slide shows.

Personally, I would start out with a free theme of your choosing. Get the basic 4 to 5 pages built and published and the menu built. Once you have the basic pages and sidebar established, I would check with your friend and while he's watching you, go through several of the free themes and see if he likes any of them. If none of them work for him then go ahead and spend money on a premium theme. It really depends on how much you or your friend wants to spend. Just my opinion!

You can use Wordpress to build the website. I would recommend that you get a premium theme for the job though.
