I was in Jr. High School at the top of the gym on a rope when he blasted off. They piped the radio feed through the school.
Hi James - wow that must have been something to hear it as it happened.
Think a lot of us take a lot for granted these days. Look at Elon Musks's rocket landing without a hitch after delivering to the space station - that to me is headline news... but sadly I don't think many really paid much attention.
I don't know it it was on the same scale as being the first person in your nation to get into space and see the world the way he did - but still impressive nonetheless.
Cheers, Mark
I remember that day very well.
Wow, how life has changed.
Thanks again Mark, you sent me
on a journey down memory lane.
It is amazing how far we've come since those first steps into space...
Glad you enjoyed it Ken,
Cheers, Mark
Now on Dec 8 2016 John Glenn has journeyed to that colour out of space and that shadow out of time from which no man may return!
Hey Michael - unfortunately yes. But in John's case, what a long, full life he had. Many of us who can, should aspire to do more with ours before that day comes!
All the best, Mark

I remember that there was a black out upon reentry. Everyone was concerned that John Glenn was not going to survive.
Hi Niles - yeah, particularly after the potential issue with the heat shield. I bet he was concerned too!
