The end of my journey?
I was making progress. After learning that FTP isn't possible with a siterubix subdomain, the plugin backWPup was mentioned in the live chat. The installation went fine and I succeeded in making a full backup (db + files). Then I had to realize that this is only half the way, I can't get the files back up on the server like this. After some hours I accidently opened the editor under appearance and what a surprise: you can edit all css and php files there, I don't need FTP, as it will turn out this is only partially true.
Next I added multilingual support with the qTranslate plugin. The translation was quickly done (seperate fields for pages, otherwise short notation [:en]example[:de]Beispiel[:fr]exemple). There's also a customizable language selector with flags available. Everything went smooth until I tried to set different date formats for each language. Boom! One or more database tables are unavailable. The database may need to be repaired. No big problem, right? Wrong! To allow use of this page to automatically repair database problems, please add the following line to your wp-config.php file. Once this line is added to your config, reload this page. define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true); As already mentioned I have no FTP access and because I can't access any page I also can't change this line in the editor. The site might be lost forever :-(
Lesson learned:
If you're on a subdomain, then the first thing to do is to add the following line to wp-config.php using the Appearance -> Editor: define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true); Regular backups are also no bad idea (see first paragraph for more about backups).
PS:
Another problem I solved along the way before the big bang: The font of disabled buttons is grayed out, but the hover and click effects are still there. The solution is to override the button styles with a more specific style in the css:
button[disabled]:hover {
/* turn off button hover styles */
}
(it depends on the theme what styles are applied to your button)

It sounds like you have a nice handle on PHP and coding in general. Well actually you know your CSS and alot more than I do.
Honestly, I am not sure how siterubix works, and I don't know if I would ever want to own a domain that is actually a subdomain of someone else's work. It might be great for some people however.
Web Design was one of the core courses at the university, but this only helps sometimes here, because it's more focussed on lower layers and not on the presentation. Also you just learn what technologies there are but nothing really in-depth (I'll probably never use CORBA again).
Owning a domain is not such a big problem, only about 10$ a year, it's the webspace I can't afford at the moment.

Where exactly do you put define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true); in the editor? I don't see wp-config.php
The wp-config file is in the root install folder, you need to access with ftp and edit with a text editor, are you comfortable with that stuff?
