My problems & solutions when going live with a locally developed website

I followed the instructions on http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress. So I moved all my files via FTP to the server, created a database, imported a complete backup of the local database, updated the config file and updated the few links I had in my php files. Then I tried to use the recommended search and replace tool to update the links in my database.

Problem #1: Error when trying to access searchreplacedb.php
The .htaccess file prevented me from accessing the searchandreplacedb.php. The simplest solution is to just delete this file, because it's only needed for the pretty permalinks (at least in my case).

Problem #2: Correct replacement
You have to be really careful here. I replaced http://localhost with http://mydomain.com, but then I realized that I actually have to replace http://localhost/wordpress with http://mydomain.com

Problem #3: Pretty Permalinks
This took me some time to figure out. Everything works fine with default settings, but the pretty permalinks just didn't work. After some research I found out that my hoster deactivated the mod_rewrite module and therefore I can't use pretty permalinks. I wrote an e-mail to the support and asked them if they can activate it for me, I'm still waiting for the answer, but other customers of my hoster said they'll do it if you ask them.

After all I'm pleased to see how easy it was to move my local WP site to production.
