The Affiliate Marketing Mindset

I joined Wealthy Affiliate a few days ago. However I have been an affiliate marketer in the past, before I took a hiatus while I was busy with other things. Now that I am back, looking forward to my new journey with this community, I can recount some of my experiences in my earlier stint in affiliate marketing.

One important aspect that is often overlooked is the affiliate marketing mindset while promoting products. Here are three most important parts of the affiliate mindset:

Ownership

In the beginning I considered affiliate marketing as the act of promoting someone else's products, and I know that most affiliate marketers think so too. But look at it another way and consider a product that you're promoting as something that is your own. Maybe a product that you created or designed, or one that belongs to you - and your entire approach will change.

The difference would be the degree of responsibility that you might give to your own business and one that belongs to someone else.

This is easier if you have an interest in the niche that the products are in. For example if you promote woodworking equipment and woodworking happens to be your passion you will feel a sense of ownership while you talk about those products or review them on your blog.

Compare it to knitting that you may have no interest in but you still try and convince people to buy related products.

I have seen that those with blogs based on their passion are able move up at some point in time from promoting affiliate products to actually sourcing and selling them through a store. Of course this can happen only when there is enough traffic to justify the expenses involved in sourcing products related to your niche. (That depends on keyword research and quality content creation.)

People First

Another change in mindset happens when you stop thinking only for yourself. What this means is changing the temptation to write about things you want, and choosing products to promote based on what you like. Once you see things from the point of view of a reader or a prospective customer in your niche, whether it is creating useful information or giving product suggestions, it becomes a lot easier to convince them to make a purchase.

It's not too difficult because once you're in their shoes you will automatically start seeing things from their perspective.

This is also a factor that is known to increase conversions. In fact if the prospective visitor to your site gets the exact information that he is looking for, and stumbles upon products that will meet his requirements, a purchase is more or less assured.

Consistency

The third change in mindset pertains to the very act of blogging i.e. publishing posts on your website. True, blogging gives you independence from your boss at work. But that doesn't mean that you can publish a post whenever you want. The reason being that once your blog is online a host of factors dictate that you publish as regularly possible.

For one, Google favors blogs that get updated regularly with new posts. Your readers will also check back on your blog if you have interesting content and expect to find new posts. Lastly you can meet your goals only if you continue publishing posts and driving traffic through promotions.

There could be various other factors that are part of the change involved in the affiliate marketing mindset. Which of them do you think are important for the success of your business?
