i loaded files to filezilla public_html folder but when i entered the links in to the browser they had a 404 error
Hi Marion
i have a new domain and i wanted to add files via filezilla but when i check the links i get error 404 etc
When you have a WordPress site the usual place to upload files is in the wp-content/uploads folder. What sort of file was it that you uploaded? A file in the public_html folder is usually a .html or .htm file.
probably problems with the files or nothing telling the page to display the content, do you know what you're doing with site development? if not i'd suggest contacting site support and explain what you're trying to accomplish.

I have two websites but both are similar in name
I want to know can I change the name of one of them or should I delete one completely and start again?
You can change the name of your site.
First, you want to change the domain name, right? Because if it is not a domain name, you can give your site whatever name you want.
So this is what you should do:
1. Purchase a new domain name (from WA, Namecheap, etc.). Then create a new website under WA Site Manager. Or create a new free website under WA Site Manager.
2. On the WA Site Manager and under your website details (the one which you want to give a new name), click on the "Move" button. Then choose the site where you want to move it.
Follow the instructions and if you succeed, your site is moved from old domain name to the new one.
Hope it helps :)
God bless you!
domain name is what you see in the URL: like http://cnn.com, http://egonsarvreviews.com, http://mywonderfulsite.com, etc., etc.
Now if your domain name is http://mywonderfulsite.com (for example), then in your Wordpress Admin dashboard you can give your site a name that appears as a title: In our case "My Wonderful Site."
However, you can give your site some other name as well:
Singapore Zoo Fan Page, Antarctic Book Store, etc.
Usually people prefer to keep the URL and the website name the same (or at least similar).
That means, if you want to change your website name, it is wise to change the url (domain name) too. :)
Ok let me try and understand
this is what I have hosted here at WA transferred from name cheap some time back
Is this my domain - mmaguiremtips.com
Dashboard - Mmaguiremtips.com
Can I adapt this to promote WA as I have another site called
mariescrafttip.com
Any suggestions or guidance would be great.
In my opinion, both mmaguiremtips.com and mariescrafttip.com do well.
The second one tells automatically, it's about craft tips. The first one is about tips - so it's up to you to choose what kind of tips you want to give your readers.
So you can use it to promote WA.
The only problem I see here is that both domain names use a bit difficult spelling (not easy to remember). The first has double m in the beginning, and the latter has double t in the end.
Easy to make mistake while typing. As for links though - no problem. The problem is only with those coming directly.
So I can't change the spelling?
What do you mean by "those coming directly"
Sorry for all the questions
Marie
In your domain name you cannot change the spelling.
those coming directly - here I mean those who remember that you have such a wonderful website and they want to visit it. Now they open a browser and type your site's url in. But because it is not so easy to remember, it's easy to mistype it.
That's why it's wise to use something simple (and easy to remember) for a url.
In the past I used this: honestwaytomakemoneyonline.com
Way too long, right? So now I use egonsarvreviews.com (My name is egon sarv).
One option, therefore, is to buy a domain name with your name only (like in my case: egonsarv.com) That way you build up your personal brand.
Or, I have found, you can use some animal (bird) - Sports clubs like to use it - Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Tigers
You can borrow the idea - pelicanmarketing.com (find a proper clip art image for the logo of your brand and that's it. Promote whatever you want).
Some examples: Amazon.com (they don't sell rivers) or Apple (they don't sell apples, do they?)
Hi Egon
I am after going through your site egonsarv.com and I have to say it is easy reading and understanding.
It is simple and plain meaning this in the best possible way.
I think I will wipe off the pages for my site Mmaguiremtips.com
and see if I can adapt to promote WA like you have.
Please can I pick your brains now and again for help
Marie
I help if I can and know how to. But you must know, I am also pretty much a novice blogger. But if I can help, I try to give my best.
You don't need to wipe away your existing pages though. If you don't mind, I recommend to spend $10 and buy a new (easier) domain name.
Otherwise, you can keep this one mmaguiremtips.com and just redesign your logo (at the moment is the same as your domain name - which is meaningless to most of the people out there.
It would be much better if you write "Marie Maquire Tips" as the name of your website and promote it that way.
And tell people somewhere in your About page (and in a sidebar) that your name is Marie Maguire (give your face image too).
Then mmaguiretips.com becomes meaningful. No need to change that in that case.
Egon
Thanks for the advice sounds logical either way so I might have a go at redesigning. It will be good practice.
Let's see how it goes.
Thanks again.
Marie
If you're talking about a free .siterubix.com site, you can change it by creating a new site with a different name. If you're talking about a hosted domain, you would have to pay to purchase a new domain name.
