The Dangers of Perfectionism
I've been working on my "About Me" post....again for my Online Entrepreneurship Certification training, and I've come across an all-too-common "enemy": Perfectionism.
Part of it, I think is that I care so much about my niche. I want this to be the best it can be. I want it to be "just so", and that stops me. It makes me feel like I am hitting a brick wall. but what are the dangers of perfectionism?
Nothing ever gets accomplishedIf we keep overthinking and working and working to get a blog post written, to get an "About Me" post/page written, it'll just stay in draft form and it will never get published. We'll think about it, and think about it, and it will become easier to put it off till the time is right to get it done. That of course never happens.
It just sits there, and we make no progression in this area or any other. We let fear come in, which leads to the next: procrastination.
We will be more likely to procrastinateThe more we overthink, the more we will find things that won't threaten our perfectionism. That won't make us scared to "put ourselves out there". We'll simply find other things to do that might need to get done, but will put the "cart in front of the horse". But the most important thing won't get done, till we put our focus and just "get 'er done". There's this song by Devo I like. It's called Later is Now. For me, it talks about the dangers of procrastination, which is, of course a different subject needing it's own post.
I have enough problems with procrastination enough as it is, but further procrastination because of perfectionim just makes it worse, and makes the fear worse. It's easier to just complete it, than not doing so. It looks fear in the face and basically "Flips the bird" at it. So, obviously I need to get my perfectionism under control, so I finish my "About me post" so I can progress on with my training.
We will have a lowering of our self-confidenceWe won't be happy with this of course, and will keep trying to get it right and get it right, but all it will do is sit there and taunt us. This will surely diminish our progress and self-confidence, and eventually self-esteem. We don't believe that we will ever be good enough, that our best isn't enough. We will hestitate and hesitate. We believe that someone else will be able to do the topic more justice than we do, assuming Impostor Syndrome doesn't come into the mix. And that really puts the clincher into our self-confidence. It's not knowing the material that gives us confidence, it's what we do with it. It helps us get competence, then self-confidence, then shows us that we can be effective. That we have the capacity for efficacy, that is, to have the ability to produce the blog post or, in my case, my "About Page".
"Good enough is good enough"One guy I'm following, a mentor says "Good Enough is Good Enough". It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be completed and published. So that's what I'm going to be working on this next week. Getting it done. I can always edit it later, if need be, and a website is never done. I'm obviously going to change over time.

I must admit that I do fall prey to seeking perfectionism at times...I remind myself all the time that I can't boil the ocean, and as Kyle states below -- perfectionism doesn't exist, so I must stop chasing it and wasting time.
-Mike
It sure isn't as easy as it seems, MIke. that old foe "Resistance" gets in the way. (For that, see Steven Pressman's book, "The War of Art") , but really want to get this done by Friday. :)
This is an important message here and over the years I have probably seen "perfectionism" lead to the most failure, even more than those that are lazy. The problem is perfect doesn't exist, and you don't know what is closer to perfect until you have real people that are your feedback. You then take your feedback, and then move closer to perfect based on that. This is how we approach WA.
You are better off doing 10 things good, then 1 perfect. That is a statement that I have made to perfectionists more times than I can count, but good leads one closer to being perfect because of the volume they can put forth and the level of feedback they get. ;)
Thanks, Kyle! Truer words were never spoken. Words to live by. That:s why I'm setting Friday (at the latest) to get this done and published. :)
Kyle,
Just wanted you to know that I got it in. Your advice was inspiring as was my mentor, Dennis Becker. "Good enough is good enough". I'm just thrilled.
I totally hear you, Maghdalena! I try to make things so perfect and then get nothing done because I can't make it perfeKT! Not so long ago, I started to just "do" instead of trying to "perfect."
I read a lot of blog posts and I very seldom find one that is perfect. Like your mentor says, "Good enough is good enough." Get it done and published!
Karin 😎
That's what I'm focusing on now this week. On the *doing*. Thanks Karin (and to Dennis Becker). :)
Striving for perfection, which by the way doesn't exist, gets us caught up in something called "Paralysis by Analysis", Maghdalena! We should just get the job done, and make corrections as required!
Jeff
Oh, yeah, Jeff. I couldn't agree more. I seem to have Analysis Paralysis in spades, so I'm trying to whip that in shape and set deadline for my About Page. I'm setting this Friday, which means it's done and published. :)
Well done, Maghdalena! The good news is, that if you find an error, you can still fix it!

Something is better than nothing.
Agreed, thanks. :)
