Brothers, Blizzards and Borders

“What do you mean the train is cancelled?”

By reading this statement, you probably are wondering how I ended up in this situation. It’s quite funny and the topic of my post today.

It all started with a dollar, a dream and a vision. I’m kidding. It started with telling my brother, who I consider lazy, to get a job that would enable him to work in the field of his dreams: aviation. After a back and forth of quips and some not-so-very-nice verbiage, my mother had come in and suggested that we take a trip to blow off some steam.

My brother has never been open to travel...

...but he said yes.

That shocked me.

So within the next hour, I booked a trip to Montreal for us to enjoy some time away from the States and everything we were dealing with. Starting the trip with McDonald’s was a classic move, as we boarded what would be a 10 hour trip to Montreal.

The next couple of days were filled with crepes, snacks, midnight food journeys and tons and tons of snow.

I mean it was COLDDDDDDDDD

My goal at the end of the day though, was to impress my brother in a way where he would want to go on more trips and journey, breaking the anti-social bubble that he had created for himself.

While I was over there, I didn’t really check the platform much but my clients were asking for work that week and it was interesting to see how some of them were affected by the country’s ice storms. Some couldn’t get out of their homes and some were experiencing snow for the first time.

Heck, when we got to our station to go home, our train was flat out cancelled.

Flights had risen 8x above their usually pricing.

It was madness at the station.

Being that I had commitments the next day that had people relying on me to be there, it was a long process before I took the next bus, train, border, train, train home.

It was crazy to think that I somehow made it back to New York that night.

I believe that the thing that I learned most from this week, and something I can share with you all for this blog post, is that no matter what circumstances arise from the snow, we still had something to do the next day. We had to get a job done. That job could not be sacrificed for the obstacle. My brother grew a lot on that trip as well and it made me think that maybe, just maybe, he’ll understand this time what it means to put in the work without ceasing.

Success and the knowledge to attain it may be in your backyard. You’ve always had the shovel, but just never put metal to dirt and searched. I encourage all of you guys to really think about this. It may sound like jargon with a nice quote at the end, but I really think about this week and how I learned so much about someone I should have known the most about. There may be some diamonds or low-hanging fruit that you are missing, or ignoring because of some bumps on the road that you don’t want to go through. I urge you and implore you to press on.

Success is a journey, and as with a journey, will require you to go past your comfort zone and truly grab for it.
