The Long Road To Starting A Business

It was a little over a month ago that I joined Wealthy Affiliate. Call it a need to accomplish more in in life, a desire to invest in myself, a desire to take extra energy and focus it, or just call me crazy. I started a website and named it after my dog...blackk9.com. The name, in itself, is a long story. I've been calling my good friend black dog for many years. That's not his real name of course, but I come from a world where nick names are used more frequently than actual real names. I'll keep this shorter than the posts I've been writing on my site.

I've only been at this a month, which is a relatively short period of time. It does seem long, however, when trying to get an idea up and running. Hopefully, my story can assist others who are just getting started. I'm by no means an expert on any of this, but I'll share what I've learned.

My adventure started with singing on at Wealthy Affiliate. I learned how to design my own web site (I am exaggerating, but I learned the basics). I knew nothing about this process two months earlier. I discovered how to create my own domain name. That's a relatively inexpensive process at $10.99 a month to retain my domain name. I used name cheap but there are many others so shop around. For some, this step may have brought them close to the end of their journey. I had to research further, as I wasn't satisfied with blindly moving forward. My website is rather unique, thus I needed a wholesale supplier. There are sites to assist you with this. Many will ask for a nominal fee, in order to access the names that they have gathered. Again, it's relatively inexpensive in the grand scheme. You may also spend weeks researching this on your own...I did.

If you live in Canada, it is very likely that you'll require a business license if you're selling services online. I'm no expert on this. I spent a great deal of time researching the Canada Revenue Agency site, in addition to the online business information with my city. I have no idea how it works in the USA, but these minor details are something to consider. As well, depending upon your employer, you may want to enquire with them. With my employer, there's actually an approval process to setting up one's own business. I'm sure this is relatively common with large organizations, in order to prevent potential conflicts of interest. My business license, for my region, was $231.00.

I'm learning as I go, and claim to be a master of nothing. If I don't have the answers, I'll ask questions from those who are more knowledgeable. I hope that lessons learned from my journey can expedite another's journey.

Take care.
