Well hello there awesome WAmily! I just noticed by Network is 6,894 and my favourite number is 7! I know how amazing you all are and with a request you are sure to jump to my aid. So here it goes 7 is my favourite number [help me get there please] by following me if you aren't already.

Valuable Lessons From Wealthy Affiliate

Many of us believe that the only value we receive from Wealthy Affiliate is by following the training, watching Jay's lives and progressing with our own websites and online businesses.

The truth is that this amazing platform schools us in subliminal ways too.

How So?

Have a look at this subtle lesson. In social media we need to follow others in order to build our networks, right? Well, if you follow enough people and help them along the way (this is the crucial piece), you are bound to build your own community of followers.

As you can see, I am following 31,569 people within Wealthy Affiliate. My return followers total 6,894 as of today, 7 December 2020.

This tells me two things:

  1. No matter how many people we follow, it will be highly unlikely for us to receive follow for follow every single time.
  2. I could and should be offering more value within the community to attract more followers (though this is not guaranteed).

Wealthy Affiliate Lessons In Action

What the above should also teach us is that we can expect the same (if not even lower stats) out in the "real world".

What do I mean by "real world"? Our:Social Media Platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • LinkedIn
  • WeChat

and any others.

I have seen people comment in the WA community that there is no benefit to being a high ranking member here. Truth is, this is our training ground for the "real world" in many ways.

The Price We Pay For Losing Traction

I have been somewhat sporadic and even absent at times since October 2019, after having had eye surgery. The recovery has been long and arduous.

Worse than that, garnering the strength for a full steam return within WA and my online business has been formidable. It is taking Herculean effort on my part to get back to where I was.

Do You Have A Naughty Brain?

Yeah, that question seems to come out from left field. No, no, don't allow your mind to run amok here, it is actually quite a serious question. Really ...

I was told on Friday that my brain has been naughty. As I said, hold onto your thoughts ... this is not what I expect you are thinking.

To cut a long story short, I had an appointment with an audiologist and then the ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat Specialist) straight after.

It turns out that I have lost some hearing in my left ear. A challenging situation because I was born deaf in my right ear - due to my Mum having German Measles whilst pregnant with me.

So why does that make my brain naughty? As explained to me by the ENT, when our brain has nothing to do, it becomes like a naughty child and looks for something to do. So, due to me not hearing in the same way as I could previously, my brain decided to wander off and look for something new to entertain it.

The result for me - tinnitus!. If you have experienced tinnitus you will know how very frustrating it can be! That ringing in one's ear could make you go a bit nutty!

Interestingly, I recall that Smartketeer wrote about the Tinnitus niche being a lucrative niche - it's not for me to focus on, but maybe you or someone you know?

Even more interestingly (for me at least), the less you focus on the ringing in your ears, the less you hear it. I am told that it becomes like highway traffic that you eventually hardly hear at all.

Double Trouble

My experience with not being able to see or focus visually for a dedicated period of time after the eye surgery resulted in something similar but from a visual perspective.

My brain changed in the way it absorbs information - both in speed and endurance. I have had to train myself to read a book, actual words on paper, to regain the reading ability I enjoyed prior to surgery. "Enjoyed" is also an operative word in this context, due to the effort it takes, enjoyment of reading was lost too.

This too is taking a Herculean effort, it's an ongoing process.

How Do My Hearing & Visual Challenges Relate To Your WA Business?

It's like anything. The less we do, intentionally or not, the less our brains will function automatically.

We have to keep our brains engaged in an intentional way. If not, it is only too easy to become lazy (for want of another word) and focus on whatever requires little effort.

For me that has been Netflix and social media. You know, just spending time online mindlessly watching moving images.

Which means, if we spend time in WA just watching what everyone else is doing ... guess what ... that becomes mindless and certainly does not grow our businesses, nor add value to the community.

There Is Good News & It's Around How To Keep Your Brain Engaged

Start by asking yourself these questions (this has been my journey, hope it helps you):

  • What brought you to Wealthy Affiliate?
  • Why did you start this journey?
  • How do you want your online business to make a difference?
    • In your life
    • In the lives of those you love
    • In the lives of others (if you are like myself and Mel, you will have a social entrepreneurship calling on your life too)

Then look at the other side of the coin and ask yourself these questions:

  • How will I feel if I do not achieve my goals with WA
  • How will that impact:
    • You?
    • The lives of your loved one's?
    • The lives of others if you are a social entrepreneur?

Once You Know (Or Remember) Your "Why", It Makes All The Difference

Answering the questions above will help you re-energise yourself and reignite your passion.

Knowing why you are doing what you do will keep you going through the tough times. Expect the tough times, they will come - that is life. (If they don't, take it as a miracle and practice gratitude in a big way!)

I did enjoy the article. I was already following you.
If you want more followers, then - yes - you need more content.

I already find your content interesting, but maybe others do not.
The answer is here in WA, and I am sure you will get the followers you want.

I would love a solution for tinnitus.....

All the best.

Alex

Hi Alex
Haha, you are very blunt - perhaps that is what I needed today. As you say, not everyone will find my content interesting, I do believe we "attract our tribe" in the online world (and offline for that matter).
If you find the solution for tinnitus, please, please let me know.
All the best to you too.
Blessings

Apologies if I was a little too forthright in my comment. I meant no offense, only my opinion, and not an expert one.

Alex

No offense taken at all, Alex. Lol! Really, I appreciated the straight talk. :-)

This is great, Louise, and you DO follow a lot of people. I used to use a phrase, "the tipping point". That is, the point at which you have more followers than the number of people you follow yourself. I have manages to achieve it a few times, but it is illusive. Thanks for a great article!

Hi Marsha
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and leave a comment.
When I first joined WA I made a point of welcoming new members every day (twice a day) and following everyone I hadn't followed already. It was a bit of a game for me because there was a cut off to how many you could follow at a time, probably some kind of algorithm or setting in the WA system. I wanted to reach that every day. Not that I am competitive or anything, lol!
Now you have given me something else to aim for, "the tipping point", lol!
So glad you appreciated this article, thank you for saying so.

WOW. You follow a LOT of people. That says to be that you're back to being engaged. It DOES take a lot of effort to get back when you're gone a while AND I believe your brain does get lazy if you don't use it wisely such as only on mindless endeavors. Stay the course!!!!

~Debbi

Thank you so much, Debbi.
It's interesting how the brain operates - this is not just laziness, is a lack of use that seems to make it atrophy! Fortunately, our brains are able to create new pathways and that helps us get around the challenges.
I appreciate your encouragement :-)

PS Yeah, it just goes to show how many people you need to follow in order to develop a sizeable network. I would love to know what the average stats are, followers to followees.

The brain has always been interesting to me and I get that if you don't use it, you lose it. I see it frequently in some of the people around me. They just want to do what I call "brain dead" stuff.

My followers compared to those I follow is pretty close but I'm only in the 5000s for each.

~Debbi

The brain is fascinating for sure. My daughter's father was shot in the head and is brain damaged as a result. He went from "probably not going to survive/live" to "he's stable but going to be a vegetable" to "he's may be able to move some limbs" to now where he is able to do most things and his biggest hindrances are his speech (terribly difficult to understand) and his short term memory. He is a wonderful human being and father. A bit like Mr Bean due to the brain injury, he has a great sense of humour which helps. Fortunately, he was able to move to the UK where he has excellent care and has enjoyed some "protected employment". Not much sadly because he does thrive on being active.
I had a look at your followers and have decided that I need to even the scales on mine too, not sure how to get that right but it's something to work towards.

I don't always welcome brand new people although I do sometimes if they do a real profile. I've been trying to catch many of the new premium members as I can but I don't do a cut and paste response so it takes longer. You have to do what works for you.

Rank 66, 113 posts - you are doing great here. Instead of 7K let me say 7777 here we come (you love 7's). Wishing you all the healing in the ear, eye, and as needed. Great read

Oooh, Chris, I like the way you think! 7777 is game on! :-)
Thank you for taking the time to read and leave me a great comment - much appreciated.

7 is my lucky number too. Oddly I used to wear a number 7 rugby shirt, often batted no 7 at cricket, lived at no 7 more often than not so I must have been very lucky! Anyway ... I look forward to the fireworks for 7777!
Richard

Hi Richard
That is interesting - 7 is a very special number. It's certainly been an important number in your life! I enjoy watching Rugby, particularly when the Springboks are playing :-) Cricket has never really caught my attention though my daughter loves it and was a cricket scorer or her high school.
Fireworks at 7777 - yes, I like the sound of that!
Blessings
