Is being misunderstood a good thing in the online world?

Being controversial, does that frighten you or excite you? Take Seth Godin for example, he is criticised for being an armchair expert. Do you think this bothers him? I doubt it.

Are your intentions ever misunderstood? Do people “get” you and trust what you say or are they constantly looking for the “real” meaning behind what you say? One thing for sure, putting yourself out into blogspace is putting you on the line. Unless you are prepared to provide opinions and perspectives there will be nothing unique for the world to hear. There are millions doing this and also millions that aren’t so you really have to assess which camp you belong to.

Wealthy Affiliate is giving me a chance to test myself, see if I am really made of the strong stuff I think I could be. I have never been afraid to speak my mind but still have things to learn about handling criticism - just ask the hubby! Interesting dichotomy isn’t it. The difference between playing it safe and living comfortably or choosing something bigger. Perhaps people like me choose their battles more carefully, or do I only speak my mind when I don’t mind the whack so much because it is something I feel more strongly about? Maybe, maybe not but there is an amazing opportunity here to learn more about ourselves.

I also wonder if bloggers have a stronger need to be liked, heard or recognised. Or do we all have different motivations so generalisation is not possible? One phrase I love is “same, same but different”. We seem to have similar basic needs as human beings but the permutations and combinations of needs manifestation is just soooooo fascinating!!!

Yes blogspace provides more opportunities to be misunderstood, bring it on! Well that's how I feel today at least. Would you rather be misunderstood or unheard? Too many questions right!!!

Well my take on it is first I love this thank you. ; o) and then I think that the people that are like minded or somewhat will understand us, the people who aren't well.... they probably won't and someone else will have to speak to them. It said we are to speak with authority.
God bless

Hi there, this is a good piece of writing, personal yet universal. Just keep a few WA comment lists around and when you have been "whack"ed , read the messages from the "wiser ones." Build your life around what resonates with you, not against you!

It takes courage to 'expose' oneself in this way. Speaking generally, readers are more likely to 'knock' than support your opinions, which is usually enough to keep mine to myself. So, go livleadluv and other bloggers. If you write to educate others or to enhance understanding of oneself, and receive positive feedback then confidence can only increase ... and everyone wins.

I am reading (amongst other things) "Stop Playing It Safe" by Margie Warrell so your comment about courage makes complete sense to me Susie AnnR. It's a great read!!

One thing I've come to know through experience is that you can not please everyone. People will thank you, maybe not today or tomorrow or it might even be never. I personally rather you be honest and speak your mind even if this means you might get misunderstood; in fact, this might be a source for a start of good discussion.

I have a different slant on blogging, it gives me an outlet for my thoughts and opinions that I would normally keep to myself. I usually write for my own pleasure without concern that someone else might actually read it. Sometimes I like the result and sometimes not so much. I've received some nice comments lately which I'm not too sure I like- people actually read and liked what I wrote. Puts pressure on me to improve and put more thought into my topics. On second thought maybe I will continue to go with the flow- seems to be working. Enjoyed your article- inspiration for another blog.

Love that approach!!

If you say something as straightforward as "The sky sure is blue today.", inevitably, someone will say,"what do you mean?" All we can do is speak as clearly as possible. We can't force anyone to understand.
