Slightly confused on when to join affiliate programs?
Just wondering about when to join affiliate programs. The basics of my website is together and I'm adding content. I've been reading here that it's best to add content first then add affiliate links. However, if I'm wanting to promote a product and write an article about it, do I need to wait to add the affiliate link later down the track when I have traffic? How can you generate commissions if you haven't joined any affiliate programs because my website is new, and yet I may have products mentioned in articles with no links. I've also read on affiliate program sites that I'm interested in, that if no sale is made in 6 months they may discontinue my affiliate link. Ugh, just not sure when to string all this together. Hope this all makes sense to someone....

I definitely think if you build your audience so you get decent traffic it will be easier to introduce WA the them later because you will have built trust. It's the same for any business build trust first...my 2 cents worth!
Thanks Michael for your thoughts. I wasn't necessarily thinking about WA, but other affiliate links to products in line with my niche. I will definitely be looking to gain an audience for sure.

Hi Kymmie, of course it's always better to have some content on your site before applying for affiliate programs but, a lot depends on the program you are interested in. Best thing to do is read the program requirements as each one is different.
Amazon seems to be fairly simple and will approve right away without looking at your site but, I have applied for a few thru CJ Affiliates like Expedia that reviewed my site before they approved it, some as soon as i hit submit I got an approval response. I think in most cases it's not the amount of content you have (i dont have a lot) but, the type and they are also looking to insure that your site is not inappropriate.
In some cases when you are applying the affiliate program has a drop down that you can select the status of you site like, new/still creating or active or whatever, it's always best in the "more information" box you point out that your site is new and still in process.
And one final thing, I applied for one program and I still had my email that I used to join WA as my website email, the program requested that I change the email to be the same as the site name, once I did they approved me.....not sure if they were overly picky or what but, something to consider.
Hope my rambling helps you out some :)
Thanks Jeff, really appreciate your input. It has clarified things a little more. :)
