Focus is the foundation that supports every skill you’ll build. Without it, you will drift. You will buy things you don’t need. You will chase ideas you never develop. And worst of all? You’ll lose confidence in yourself.

Why Focus Matters

Focus matters because life is complicated. We have family to care for - spouses, children, parents, or grandchildren. We are working our jobs; full or part-time or maybe even navigating retirement. Most of us are not twenty-year-olds with 16 hours a day to “work it til you make it.” That’s why we have to make the hours count.

Why We Lose Focus (and How to Get It Back)

A few of the many reasons we lose focus are: the curveballs life throws at us, the gurus, and shiny new tools that promise shortcuts and the compulsion to compare ourselves to people who seem far ahead of us. Moreover, the cacophony of external opinions and voices from friends, family, and YouTube videos can create a mental fog, causing us to get sidetracked, and forget, what we came to achieve.

In addition, we live in an age of relentless notifications and instant access to information; our concentration is constantly under siege. We are frequently ensnared by the allure of multitasking, convinced that we can efficiently juggle various commitments. However, this fragmentation of focus usually results in our doing everything and getting nowhere.

Ultimately, the journey to regain and maintain focus is a pursuit of clarity—a commitment to understanding our true goals and aligning our daily actions with them. By doing so, we can navigate the complexities of modern life with greater intention and resilience.

To stay on track:

Revisit the goals you set for yourself. Pinpoint what has distracted you. And how and why you’ll avoid it. Set boundaries with time and tools and track your writing and work time. (I wonder if there’s an app for that!😁)
