Writer's Block: How do you overcome it? My niche is about animal cruelty and this picture clearly shows a dog who isn't! But I'm stuck for ideas at the moment or rather have so many ideas I can't decide where to to start. Thoughts anyone??

The way I approach it is by having a piece of paper next to me ( no more than that 1 piece.) When I research, I only write down the most important keyword/sentence. The ones that I believe would stick and that I fully understand.

After I have done this, I wait an hour, thinking of what the content I researched means... I talk to myself out loud, walk in circles waving my hands as I describe what I have learnt as though I were teaching it, and then I sit down to write a rough draft.

The draft almost always sucks. But I try to put my entire "lecture" into it. After that I calm down, get a coffee and read the text with an audience mindset. Editing the text till it fits my needs.

But the most important advice I can give is to write for yourself first, then edit it for the masses later.

Hope this helps.

Wow! Thank you! This is great advice. Actually before reading this I have a tablet of paper I've carrying with me and jotting down ideas. These ideas are scribbled all over a page, but I know what it means, others won't. LOL!

Since my niche is about animals, and animal cruelty, and how to prevent it, etc. I've been watching shows such as NatGeo and documentaries about Sled Dogs and animals being kept in roadside zoos, I've literally stumbled upon some great topics and was able to take photos off the television with my phone.

Now, I have some great topics to write about, some websites to look at and credit, and photos to place on my site in which Google has never seen! Awesome!!

So, yes wandering with a piece of paper is by far the best practice, thanks so much!

Best wishes,

Kris

Make a list of all of your ideas. Then prioritize them. I bet naturally they will fall into an order that you can follow. You can also see how they relate to keywords and sort them that way too.

Thank you Jeannine, this is a great idea too. When I try to prioritize, things go all over the place. My mind works faster than my fingers sometimes and it seems that when I write a blog/article (that's what I call it) I want to write more than 1000 words. I' m struggling in that department.

I write about animal cruelty, so it's difficult to keep it short.

Best wishes,

Kris

Articles can be longer than 1,000 words for sure, as long as you stay on topic. Keep writing until you are satisfied you have covered the topic, whether that's less or more than 1,000 words or not.

Thank you, that's good to know, but the training states you should keep your posts at a 1000 word max to keep your traffic at your site. Too many words could "scare" away more traffic per say.

You don't find that to be true? As long as you are on topic and say the blog is in "bite size pieces"?

Ughh....At this point I just feel like I'm failing.

Kris

Yes, I've gone longer, and I've gone shorter. I finish the topic. In my case it's about car insurance, so there's a fair amount of info to share and I keep writing until I've done that.

my secret? I imagine he/she is right in front of me.

It gets solved instantly, as far as writer's block.

easy for me!

hehehee

Frank - thanks for asking!

Thanks Frank! I'm working on it as we speak!

Go for a long walk.choos e quiet spot close your eyes and relax for an hour or listen to some remaking music and start writing like you are talking to a friend clears the brain

This is great advice, I think I will take a walk and take my dog. She's a St. Bernard/Rottweiler mix and can barely stand to be away from me for a minute.Thank you.

There! You also have the best source of inspiration. Enjoy

My niche is catering to those who are in need of ideas or help to overcome THE BLOCK. Just as a thought the picture you have could inspire a story about those animals who have been rescued and provided for and how they are doing. Also you may consider picking one of your ideas and focusing it on your local area. Hope this helps.

That's a great niche to be in. I'm we all get the block at some point. Honestly, I believe I'm getting burned out on the animal cruelty images. It just doesn't stop. Just this morning there were two cases on the news in neighboring counties here in Florida, one woman had 50 animals! In her house! That's a story I'm going to follow for sure.

I do need to write about something positive though for sure. I need that on my site not only for me but for my readers as well.

Kris

Look for some inspiration by researching the topic?

Wayne

The sad thing is I don't need to do much researching and when I do I find more and more horrific stories. It's starting to keep me up at night and it's literally making me ill. The stories I've written are just awful what these animals are subject to. But, I think my next story is going to be about something positive or maybe a product review, or maybe just a good story about my own dog.
Thanks for the help.

Kris

Oh so you didn't read Uncle Buffet? A bit a writers block! Your are dealing with some serious issues Kris, find time to escape and look at what you do from a different angle?

Just a suggestion, you are in the driving seat!

Wayne

Serious issues? Oh no! Don't say that! I'll take a look at your article, I think I'm going to write about something on a positive note and see if that doesn't help. All this negativity is getting to me right now, I'm a positive person and not being able to help these animals tugs at my heartstrings, maybe I need a pity party. LOL

Kris

I feel what you are saying, my post is a bit of fun!

You are so right, take some positive steps! Well done!

Wayne
