Diabetes is a disease, which people often don't realize they have. It is even possible to have it, get rid of it and not know you had it. However, even though you're not aware of its presence, if you have diabetes it is working within your body to damage cells.

Diabetes occurs when your body's normal method of handling sugar encounters problems. Sugar in your blood is called glucose. It enters into your bloodstream through the foods you eat and from your liver. Your body needs this sugar as it provides energy for your muscle and tissue cells.

But in order to do its job, glucose needs the help of insulin. Insulin is present in certain cells of your pancreas known as beta cells. As you eat, your pancreas releases insulin into your bloodstream. The insulin circulates and allows sugar to enter your cells. This reduces the sugar in your bloodstream. When these levels begin to drop, the pancreas stops releasing insulin.

Glucose is also stored and manufactured in your liver. When insulin levels are high, your liver stores the extra sugar. When insulin levels are low, your liver converts this sugar into glucose and sends it into your bloodstream.

However, if this intricate balancing process malfunctions, the glucose does not enter the cells but builds up in the bloodstream until it is excreted in the urine. This condition has two causes. Either your pancreas is not producing enough insulin or your cells have become resistant to insulin. In either case, you have what is known in the medical profession as Type 2 Diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus.

There are also two other types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. Your immune system attacks the beta cells in your pancreas and prevents it from producing the insulin you need. This type is often called juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes. It does most often occur in children and they do need a daily intake of insulin. However, adults can develop Type 1 and people with Type 2 diabetes may also need insulin.

Sometimes diabetes develops temporarily during pregnancy. This is called gestational diabetes. It happens because the hormones you secrete during pregnancy sometimes increase your body's resistance to insulin. It is not common, occurring only in 2 to 5 percent of expectant mothers. It usually appears in the third trimester. Since most women are under a doctor's care during pregnancy, it is caught early. After the baby's birth, gestational diabetes goes away, however it leaves the mother at risk for type 2 diabetes later on.

Medical scientists do not know what causes diabetes but have identified certain risk factors. Your risk increases if someone in your family has had the disease.

Although scientists don't know why, some races are more vulnerable to diabetes. It is more prevalent among Blacks, Hispanics and American Indians, than among Caucasians.

Age, weight, and inactivity are also factors. As people age, they tend to be more sedentary and often gain weight.

While some of these risk factors are beyond your control, two are not. You can do something about your weight and you can certainly become more active. Addressing both issues goes a long way toward preventing diabetes.

And the most important measure to take is to be tested to see if you already have the disease. There are several blood tests available that are inexpensive and simple to perform. Some doctors do these as part of a routine physical but not all doctors. If you have certain symptoms,Like going to the bathroom all the time,Dry mouth.Make sure that you let your doctor know. I have been a diabetic since 1990 I was on insulin for 6 months,What a ride.

What most people do not know, Diabetes can run with in family members. I had read every book out there,Went to every class on this,I even stood up after getting off of insulin and pills and told the person,That was putting on the class,That I do not have it.That did not go well. The person that was directing the class,Told me once you are a diabetic you always be one.I thought that I was in an AA,Meeting. I am the person that always went to the gym, Was a teacher for many years with Karate,And judo. Here is my point to anyone out here reading this.(If you bend down to tie your shoe,And when you are doing this task,And have a hard time breathing,You are overweight.) My tip of the day.To all. Try this one time for me and you will know what I mean. Perfect blood sugar range 80-120 Hope that this helps,And watch your sugar intake. Thanks for the article. Diabetes is a serious thing. One should do everything they can to get it under control. My heart goes out to the young people who get juvenile diabetes. It can cause great suffering for the entire family, and the child is just a victim of bad genes.

Thanks Donna.

Got to comment on my diabetes for 20 yrs. I still have my toes. So even though I get high readings, I get the low readings also and shake, I must be doin sumtin right. Doing Lantus and R now.
Been on insulin for 16yrs. at least 25,000 shots in the belly 3-4 times a day. Hence the weight of 212lbs. I hit 235lbs last year, but eating better choices this year.

So all those things Ken says are true.

I noticed he did not mention the symptoms of diabetes : insatiable thirst with blurry vision, unexplained weight loss, frequent urination, lack of energy after eating, wanting to sleep one hour after eating(means your sugar level might be over 130 and up.Could be 400-500 and all you want to do is sleep, even while driving)
If you have those symptoms get a Glucose tolerance test.Or do your own if you have a meter.Put lots of syrup and butter on two pancakes and test your sugar level at 1hr and then two hours and then 4 hours. The highest it will ever be is 1 to 2 hours after eating. You will see it dropping after 3hrs.

The other test is for the type of food you eat. Meat, eggs and cheese are protein, so they will not raise your sugar levels very much.
Its the carbohydrates that turn to sugars and sugar itself that raises the level 130 and above.
Hope this helps one person to get a diagnosis.

Thanks Bingo, You are right,I should have added the symptoms,You covered that rest,Except when the sugar is high,One will keep running to the bathroom.

Let me add that, frequent urination

Ken, asked me if I was going to write a blog about Diabetes. He knows that it's a major concern of mine, it runs in my family. I told him I wasn't planning on it.

According to http://www.medscape.com/, 'Obesity's Toll: 1 in 5 Deaths Linked to Excess Weight'. That means that one out of five people you know will die from what they eat and how much they move. Why isn't that Front Page News?

Diabetes, is a weight related disease. You can avoid it by eating to live. That's what I'm doing, you can too. Come visit me.

Thanks for your input,Phil

Ken, I wanted to add that Dr. Joel Fuhrman, in his book "Eat To Live" writes, "Over 90% of all diabetic patients on insulin are off it within the first month."
Something to think about.

Sure Phil,That is fine.

Very nice !

Thanks Eric.

Diabetes is just a rather difficult disease to work with in so many ways. I know some people that have it under control and others that are doing extremely poor.
Glad to hear you are doing well with yours! :))

Thanks Kim,When one can master the art.One may be able to control it.Glad to hear from you.

Hi sharon,Thank you for reading this. You do not want to enter this club.

no I sure do not, I have enough problems, lol!

My sister is a bad diabetic even with tight medical control. We both had low blood sugar all our lives and then she took off into the danger zone. I'm borderline. I take a FBS every morning to make sure I'm not climbing. Good info!

Hi Carla, I have been on the low side often,Such a bad feeling..Pop with sugar can boost your sugar very fast.Very glad that you take your FBS every day.

What people need to know is that it is not a life sentence any more. My husband reversed his diabetes four years ago he came off the maximum number of metformin a day to nothing, no medication. yes the rest of his family are still diabetics. Read his story here.
