Florence was born in 1820, to a wealthy British family in Florence Italy.

At the age of 24 she wanted to be a nurse she had been educated at home by her father. Her parents were opposed to her wanting to become a nurse. Despite her parents, Florence went ahead and trained to become a nurse.

She felt a call from God to serve nursing. She resolved to try and follow God's will and being a service to others. Florence had the opportunity to marry, but she refused a couple of suitors. She didn't want of anything standing in her way of nursing and God.

In 1855 the Crimea war broke out, bloody conflict and many casualties on both sides. Late in 1855 Florence was asked to travel to Crimea and organize a group of nurses. Florence was strict in selecting and training the nurses. She was helped getting nurses that were trained by Elizabeth Fry,s School of Nurses. She also campaigned for better prison conditions.

During her time in the Crimea war she developed a persona as being THE LADY WITH THE LAMP.

By the time she returned home, she became a national heroine and was decorated with numerous awards including the one from Queen Victoria.

With the help of donations to the Nightingale Fund, she was able to fund a training school for nurses at Thoma's Hospital, London.

In 1859 she wrote NOTES ON NURSING, that became a standard reference book for those entering the nursing profession and general public who want to learn basic techniques.

Florence Nightingale inspired nursing in the American Civil War, and in 1870 Trained Linda Richards, who returned to the US where she developed the NURSING PROFESSION IN AMERICA.

in August 1910 Florence Nightingale fell ill and seemed to recover and was reported to be in good spirits. One week later on the evening of Friday August the 12th she developed a array of troubling symptoms. Florence died on Saturday August 13 at 2 pm at her home in London.

Paying tribute to the founder of modern nursing.
