Always Register & Keep Your Domains With A 3rd Party Registrar
This is from personal experience of over 10yrs of doing this stuff. I say this without blaming any hosting company, but to those who own the domains themselves. Buy and register your domain names with a 3rd party registrar like namecheap or namesilo. When you want to point your domain name to a specific web such as wealthy affiliates, all you have to do is to use their DNS address and point that domain name to their host.
Keep It Simple Silly & Registrar Your Domains At A 3rd Party Registrar
Its a simple process that can turn into a big mess if you don't do it this way. The two main reasons has to do with control. Now it might not be as painful if your new and your domain name has no authority on the internet. But if you're someone who wants to keep that domain name and/or you have built a brand from that domain name, then it would behoove you to keep that domain at a 3rd party registrar.
Keep Full Control Of Your Domain Name At All Times
If you ever leave that host and want to get your domain back, do you really think they are your top priority just after you stop paying them money to be their host? As a newbie, I found out the hard way and lost a domain name now that is worth over $10k dollars. I didn't know back then, and I could not get it back. By the time I tried again, someone else bought it and held it for a long time which envitably ended up being worth alot of money.
Now all my domains that I lost weren't worth that, but you get what I am saying. Really, it might not have to do with anything with money or how much its worth in the future, you might just want it back because you created it and its yours!
Just Point Your Domains To Your Choice Of Web Hosts Via Your Web Hosts DNS Address
So here is the simple process of pointing your domains to any web host assuming you already bought that domain name at a 3rd party registrar.
Here's how its done at namecheap:
1. from your dashboard, scroll down to your domain name of choice
2. select "manage" and go down to the line that says "nameservers"
3. assuming that you do not already have it assigned, click on the drop down menu on nameservers where it says "namecheap basic dns" and click that little arrow or dropdown menu to the right of that phrase.
4. select custom dns
5. for wealthy affiliate nameservers, type in or cut and paste these two DNS name servers
ns1.mywahosting.com
ns2.mywahosting.com
6. click the little check to the right of that, and wait about 10 to 15 min maybe even less.
7. you're done!
Now as simple as that was to setup, its just as simple if you want to move that domain name to another web host. Trying to get it from the web host itself, well..its probably going to take at least 2-4 weeks maybe even longer to get it back.
Hope this helps!
